- Starting this thread to maybe provide a common place for listing towing weights (BW: if there is already a thread for this please transfer my weight data to there if you can). We all know the advertised weights can be significantly different than actual. When we were looking for a new trailer I was interested to know what trailer weights were and my resulting pin weight would be to ensure i had enough truck (I’m one of those that like to stay within prescribed weight limits).
We have a 2012 Chevy 3500 dually, CrewCab, Duramax/Allison drive train, 2-wheel drive. Our trailer is a Lifestyle 37ckls with 8000 lb. axles and 17.5″ wheels/tires (Goodyear G114), no generator.
Our truck ratings:
– GVWR = 13,000
– GCWR = 30,500
– Front Axle GAWR = 5600
– Rear Axle GAWR = 9375Our trailer GVWR rating = 18,800 lb.
Truck weight by itself with a full tank of fuel, wife and myself, 2 dogs (120 lb), other stuff in truck box:
– Steer Axle = 4720
– Drive Axle = 4100
– Total weight = 8820Truck and Trailer together: (truck loaded pretty much the same as before)
– Steer Axle 4640
– Drive Axle 7340
– Trailer Axles (both) = 12800
– Truck and trailer total weight = 24660Based on the above, my pin weight looks to be 3240 (or 3320 if you add in the 80 lb. ‘lost’ from the steer axle wt.) and the loaded trailer weight is 16040.
Posted: 8:10 PM – Sep 03, 2014Did you weigh your trailer alone on the scales? I just did that and posted yesterday. I’m surprised my pin is heavier than yours. It came in at 3400 with a total trailer weight of 15320. Interesting that your pin is lighter than ours and overall trailer weight is heavier. Philliptruck steer axle 4520
truck drive axle 6920
trailer axles 11920
Total 23360
unhitched with trailer axles and landing gear only on trailer scale:
total trailer weight 15320
truck steer axle 4520
truck drive axle 3520
pin weight 3400Posted: 7:26 AM – Sep 04, 2014No, i didn’t weigh the trailer by itself. You’ll notice that my steer axle weight went down by 80 lb. when the trailer attached. I didn’t add this in to the calc to get pin wt. With it added in my pin weight would be 3320. There are discussions out there debating on whether any change in steer axle wt. should be accounted for in pin wt. I could go either way i guess. For me it really doesn’t matter because either way my weights would be within limits with good margin.btw, towing mileage seems to average about 9.5 miles/gallon on our recent trip of 1600 miles that included some windy days and elevation changes of 8000 ft.
