Our new truck uses DEF and most years we get out of Minnesota for the winter, but I was thinking what if we had to stay home what happens to the DEF when it’s way below 0. I understand that DEF will begin to freeze at 12 degrees F – (-11 degrees C). At 32.5% solution both the urea and water will freeze at the same rate so that when it thaws, the fluid is not diluted or over concentrated. I wonder what happens if the DEF is frozen and you want to drive? I wonder if I use my engine heater if it keeps the DEF tank from freezing?

Does the owner’s manual say any thing about severe cold weather operation? Since there are several issues with diesels in cold weather, it seems this question should be addressed by the manufacturer.

        Jim:

We have a 2011 Chevy Duramax with DEF. We live in the great white north and our truck has experienced a few winters. We were told that GM uses a heater in the DEF tank. Our tank is 6 gallons and is under the passenger floor

From the 2011 Diesel Supplement manual.

“Filling the DEF tank in cold climates

DEF will freeze below 12°F (-11°C); however, your vehicle is equipped
with an automatic preheating system which allows the DEF system to
operate below 12°F (-11°C). When the vehicle is not in operation for an
extended period of time with temperatures at or below 12°F (-11°C), the
DEF tank could freeze. If the tank is OVERFILLED and freezes, it could
be damaged, therefore DO NOT OVERFILL.”

Thanks I just found this information on line. I’ve been unable to find anything in my Ford owner’s manual on DEF. Checking on line I’ve found that I should have received a diesel supplement booklet but did not. The forum tells about the preheating system They caution that if the truck was to set in cold weather not running with a full tank of DEF that it could cause damage to the tank by the DEF freezing and expanding. Looks like in cold weather to keep the fuel tank full and the DEF not.
