Since we have owned our Lifestyle, we have been hearing loud popping noises in or under the floor and not in any particular area. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any idea what could be going on?

I’ve not heard of this problem with the Big Foot system, but friends of our that have the Lippert system complain about a popping sound. They solved it by using a special hydraulic fluid made by Caterpillar.

I found the information for the Lippert system fix, but I would first see what Big Foot had to say.

If there is a popping noise in a Lippert Leveling system, Lippert has approved adding a quart of anti-stiction fluid. Approved fluids are listed by brand name and fluid characteristics below:

        1. Torco RFF Grade 15 (Fig. 1)

        2. Maxima Fork Oil Grade 15 (Fig. 2)

        3. Caterpillar Hydraulic Oil Additive 1U-9891 (Fig. 3)

For maximum results in the shortest amount of time, please follow the preparation and procedure exactly as written below. Failure to follow the preparation and procedure may result in delayed resolution of the audible disturbance.

        Preparation:

        1. Obtain a clean container (large enough to hold a quart of fluid)

        2. Obtain a fluid extraction device (siphon, turkey baster, etc.)

        3. Fully retract all hydraulic cylinders and jacks.

        Process:

        1. Using the fluid extraction device, remove one quart of fluid from the power unit reservoir.

        2. Add 1/2 quart of the specified fluid.

        3. Extend all hydraulic cylinders and jacks fully.

        4. Add the remaining amount of the specified fluid.

        5. Fully retract all hydraulic cylinders and jacks.

        6. Run the Auto-Level feature on the Level-Up system per the instructions found in the Owner’s Manual.

        NOTE:

If the noise persists, the addition of a second quart may be necessary. Follow steps 1 through 6.

Thank you Traveler! We have suspected the hydraulics and I did post to the Bigfoot thread on this forum with no response but they may not be monitoring it. I will contact Bigfoot on Monday.

Please do, I’ve had that problem ever since new, and at every Tampa RV show I’ve cornered the Bigfoot guys and asked the same question. Never an answer.

If you ever get one, I’d be interested in knowing how to fix it.

No such noise in my rig. I have been 90 in the day and 30 at night, 50/30, and 90/70. Maybe it is the fluids used for various build dates.

I spoke with Rick, the warranty manager at Bigfoot this morning. First of all, the Bigfoot system uses Dexron, not hydraulic fluid (as the Lippert system uses) so the use of “anti-stiction” fluid is not an option. We will be leaving here shortly and putting the 5th wheel into storage for the summer, but when we return I will do the following to find out which of the four corners is making the noise. Right now I think it it may be the left front so I will start there by raising that corner and placing a jack stand underneath and lower the unit onto the jack stand. I will then raise the leveler off the ground so that there is no load on it and listen to see if the popping noise stops. It will take a number of days to determine this as the noise does not occur every day. Once I have determined which leveler is noisy I will get back with Bigfoot about how to get it repaired or replaced under warranty. I will likely have to remove it and send it to them.
