- I bought 1, Surge Guard Universal Lock Hasp!
Since surge protectors cost around $300, mine came with last rig
so when I sold that rig I keep it(I’M cheap, also keep the trim line Sat)!
After getting this clasp it only locked it to 50 amp cord.
So I’M thinking(I try doing this once daily regardless, thinking) if some one wanted it they could
take surge protector and the cord now(close to $200 for 30ft plus surge $300= $500+/-).
SO I’M wanting to figure out how to connect it to rig and see if someone else has done this?
Mine plugs into the back driver side and I store it in the back storage next to it.
I though of having a wire rope attaching it inside compartment into the rig.
So when I rolled up cord to store it, I’d roll up the short wire rope. I know stealing
supposedly don’t happen often I’ve read in forums.
Also a small cable/wire rope wouldn’t stop someone but slow them down.I’LL show pictures of how I do it.
Thanks every one for your replysPosted: 7:47 AM – Aug 23, 2013Don,If you take out the thin black wall at the rear of the main storage compartment, you will see where the 50 amp wire comes from the rear of the 5er and feeds up to the main breaker panel in the bathroom. You can cut that line (with power turned off!) add a male and female plug to the two cut ends, and insert your surge protector in between. Cut it in the right place, cut a a hole in the right place on that black wall and you can probably read the lights. This is where you install the permanent surge protectors. I added a master cut off 50 amp circuit breaker and single box between the surge and the main breaker panel. That way if the surge sees something wrong with power at the post, the 5er main panel never sees it unless i ignore it and throw that cutoff.
Posted: 8:19 AM – Aug 23, 2013We have our surge protector hardwired, my brother took his portable one and hardwired it into his motor home. We also have a 50 Amp RV voltage regulator that is portable. It has a built in stand and I use a bike lock to wind the cable though the stand and security the best I can to the electric pedestal at the campground. But like you said it only would slow a determined thief down.Posted: 5:21 PM – Aug 23, 2013I didn’t think about hard wiring it! Did you keep surge by where cord plugs in?Posted: 6:30 PM – Aug 23, 2013Tumble Weed:
On my brothers motorhome he re-worked his portable surge protector and hard wired it. He showed it to me and it was in a compartment close to were the power came in, but I didn’t study it real close, only to see that it can be done. I will get a note off to him, (he lives in Georgia and we’re in Minnesota) and see if he will show us what he did. He’s 82 years old and just got back from a 6,000 RV trip through Canada.Posted: 8:06 PM – Aug 23, 2013Traveler wrote:Tumble Weed:

Don’t come in the winter, we won’t be here. You’re welcome during the summer time, we’ve got 50amp service and a nice wide driveway on a Minnesota lake.

IM in Longview Tx area..Posted: 8:30 AM – Aug 24, 2013Don,On my 5er there isn’t much room to move within the side access to the rear storage compartment. To install surge protection there all work would need to be from underneath after removing the fabric underbelly. Overhead work lying on the ground is a lot tougher, but more importantly, i am not sure that you can easily access the power from below – i think that the power cord is, except for a short stretch by the capped recepticle, above the plywood deck that is the floor of the rear storage.
The black wall in main storage comes out very easily. The toughest part of the whole job is emptying the storage area.

Just be sure to mount VERTICALLY, mounting orientation is important. It’s wired in ahead of the cord (in the bay) so there’s no chance anyone will steal it and you are free to use whatever cord to connect trailer to power with no additional effort. We have a 50A Marinco cord for traditional 50A parks, a Marinco 30A cord for 30A parks OR Generator.Posted: 4:19 PM – Sep 04, 20132rinKayaker wrote:Another vote for hard-wired model. Posted: 4:43 PM – Sep 04, 2013Sorry, didn’t specify. Make sure the LINE terminals are up, LOAD terminals down, mounting surface VERTICAL.The TRC documentation doesn’t make this clear. There are relays which will fuse if the unit is mounted, say, mounting face down, or its long side down.
