generator ground feed back

I disconected the battery ground wire and the 12 volt lights stayed on untill I disconnected the generator battery ground cable. The system is getting it ground through the generator. Any thoughts on a fix.

Answered my own question. The way the gen is wire, is with a long ground cable from the batt to the gen frame ground cable. There for the batts are still grounded when you disconnect the regular batt ground cable. According to Onan, this is the best way to wire the gen. Just have to remember to disconnect both.
