I have several questions in regard to 5ver power cords
First: Has anyone had their power cord stolen while connected?? Reason I ask copper prices are currently high thus there are dollars there for the taking.
Second:Why is it 5ver power cords are not permanently connected at one end to the 5ver ie like the power cords that are connected to motorhomes.True motorhome cords could be cut.But the 5ver cords are much easier to disconnect fast.
Well quess theres a third question.Has anyone permanently attached a power cord to a 5ver??
My main concerns are not only the replacement cost but getting stuck out in the middle of no where and no place to get another cord.
Anyone having experience or thoughts on the subject would be appeciated . Thanks

I have never had anything stolen from our trailer(s).

I suspect that trailer power cords are not permanently connected to the trailer is logistical – if the cord is permanently attached you need to be able to automatically retract it or push it in to a cubby hole. 50 amp cords could not be easily pushed into a cubby hole. A couple of trailers ago we had to pull out and push in a 30 amp cord and that was painful enough!

The other logistical problem is where to install the automatic cord reel. Lifestyle offers an option for an electric cord reel (we paid for it) that is installed in the rear pass through area. When we ordered our unit we asked if the would hardwire the cord and they said no. The main reason was they weren’t prepared to cut holes in the floor or storage door where you could pull out the cord to plug it into the park pedestal. The Lifestyle electric cord reel option still is nice – you manually pull the 50 amp cord completely off the reel and when you want to put it back on the reel you just have to push the power button to pull the cord onto the reel. You need to babysit it to make sure the cord spreads itself out across the reel. We think it is easier than fighting the cord back into a rubbermaid bin!

Comoco will the electric cord roll up on that reel when it is cold outside, the reason I ask when we was going and coming home from Texas this last fall and spring we had some mornings the temp was down in low 30s and that heavy cord Lifestyle gives you is really stiff in those temps, could hardy get it rolled up small enough to fit in compartment door let alone go around that small reel

I don’t know as we have only had the trailer for a month! I suspect it will roll up though as the reel is pretty powerful (and quick)!

The first time we used the reel we had to pause it a couple of times as it was pulling the cord in faster than we could guide it.

When 30 amp or less is available, I use a cheaper 30 amp cord and an adapter at the trailer end. Much lighter and easier to coil and much cheaper to replace, if stolen. Our old rig had a 30 amp service and a cubby hole to store, with one end being attached to the trailer

Appreciate the responses.Having owned several motorhomes I liked having the power cord attached to the unit.My thought got to roll the heavy thing up anyway thus may as well roll it into a compartment vs a big roll on the ground.Cord reels seeem to be a good resolution, although not much space for one in my Cameo.Believe I need to check out how Lifestyle has mounted their reel.I assume they are using the one manufactured by Mor/Ryde ??

Stolen items.Get this one. While in a state park someone removed the handles and one rod from the waste control valves off my Cameo. If that wasnt enough they took the X chock blocks from the wheels.Been a RVer for over 10 years, stayed in a lot of unusal places and this was the first.

In closing thanks for the imput. One meets the nicest peolpe while RVing.

        A&J’s Carrilite
Our first CarriLite was a ’96 model that had the 50amp cord attached. You pushed it into a cubby thru a door that was the size of the water fill. Wasn’t the easiest, but it did bend enough in cold weather.

I believe that the cords used with the power reels are a better quality protective shield. When I was considering adding a power reel to my new trailer, during construction, there was a class A that was parked next to me. I noticed that his 50 amp cord seemed smaller in diameter then mine and was more flexible. I believe that the normal carry 50 amp outer shield is more plastic like material while a good 50 amp cord on a reel is more rubber.

We ordered the power cord reel option on our Lifestyle but it still came with the same 50 amp cord as someone who didn’t order the power cord reel option. The Lifestyle cord is not as stiff as the 50 amp cord that was on our Jayco but it is still not as flexible as a 30 amp cord.

In 7 years of fulltiming I have never even heard of an instance of power cord theft. In general, this lifestyle is the MOST safe I have ever experienced. I feel it’s partially due to the fact that it’s made up of mostly old busybodies. :)

Concerning theft. Most of the posts do have a place for a lock on it. While someone could still steal the cord by cutting it, they would have to be come equipped with a insulated cutter or face 50A shock.

Check out Shoreline reels. They make a reel that will retract automatically and can be hardwired to the trailer. They also make a real that operates by a hand crank. I have the hand crank version and it works fine. I installed in the rear compartment next to the 50 amp plug. Just four screws. Neither of the Mor/Ryde reels will fit in that area.

The option on our Lifestyle is a Shoreline Reels model CS12D-SR. It is not hard wired but it does fit nicely in the rear compartment beside the 50 amp plug. Here is a link to the cord reel: http://www.trci.net/products/shoreline- … orage-reel

If the Lifestyle 50 amp panel is supplies with 30 amps that powers but 1 leg. How to power both sides of the panel with 30 amp service?

The 50 to 30 amp pigtail sends power to each leg.

Here is another reel option that I have been considering. I do not know if it is hard wired or not.
