I am having a problem with my door side slide on my 2009 Carriage Cameo. It goes out but won’t retract unless I reverse the wires on the motor. I have check all fuses and replaced the switch. I even replaced the motor. I am wondering if there is a relay somewhere between the motor and switch that might be bad. Hard to do much without a wiring diagram, and cant find one online. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

Bob,
the usual culprit in the situation is the polarity reversing switch. Easiest test of the switch is to reverse the two battery leads on the switch and see if there is movement in the same “only out” direction. If making that change created an “only in’ motor- the switch is the problem. DO THIS TEST WITH THE WALL HALFWAY OUT OR YOU CAN CRUSH THE SLIDE TRIM!
not likely you bought a bad switch, but worth a try since you know the motor goes in both directions if you swap wires at the motor.
before I go further, is this trailer new to you and the slide never worked properly, or was it working fine and the quit? If it never worked properly, the previous owner may have had the switch out and reconnected the wires incorrectly. If this is the case, you need to correct the wiring at the switch. Identifying the hot from the battery is easy – it is the ground from the battery that is tough to find. To find it, disconnect both wires at the motor. See which wire at the switch completes the circuit – that is your battery ground – unless there is a relay somewhere in the line and that too is incorrectly wired.
reconnect the motor wires at the motor. Assuming there is no relay, you can physically connect the battery leads one way to the motor leads at the switch, and the motor will run one way. Swap those leads it will run the other way. If that does not work, you need to find the relay
2009 would not have a relay from the factory. Many owners have installed them and much heavier wires from the battery to solve the slow moving slide issue caused by the factory installing too small of a gauge wiring.
the usual place to put the relay is very close to the motor. You may need to move a bit more insulation around in order to find it. If the relay not
However on the door side (kitchenette) side, installing the relay near the motor on the dinette slide requires fishing the heavier gauge wires through the underfloor interstitial space – not an easy or fun task. An owner or tech may have taken a short cut and only installed the relay and wires half way to the motor. Better than oem, but you now need to find the relay. The second logical spot is behind the (black?) rear wall in the main storage. To get there you need to remove at least one and loosen or remove one or more of the black panels. Do not mix up the screws – the holding tank is directly below the flooring. You should find the wires to and from the slide switch directly below the spot where switches are in the living space. There are wires for two or more slide switches and maybe others. The wire to the dinette motor should be obvious because of the direction it takes towards the rear unless you have a rear awning and that awning switch is close to the slide switch (mine is not).
This area below the living space float is the only other logical place to put a relay and is a much easier run for heavy gauge wires from the battery. If you don’t see the relay, but do see significantly larger wire or wires than 10 gauge, follow those wires to the relay. If not there, I am out of ideas. Except, you can run all new wire since you have it apart.
the front awning switch may give you an idea about color coding of wires from the battery versus the reversible motor in the awning and their proper position on the switch. If there is an extra set of wires for the rear awning in close proximity to the front awning switch, those go to the rear awning outlet on the dinette slide. If you were to add a second awning, you add another switch and would tap the battery wires on the front awning switch, then connect thos rear awning wires.
hope this helps.

Hi John and thanks for the response. Was gone all day yesterday. I have eliminated the switch as a problem. I had a guy with a year older Carriage that told me there is a wiring panel under the fridge. He had the same problem as I and he found one of the power leads to the slide motor came loose under there. I will be checking thatg this morning. I will let you know what I find.

Bob,
Jack Ramsey is posting about wiring a new heavy draw 12 volt refrigerator in a Carriage and shows photos of several oem 12 volt connectors near it.
I find it hard to believe they ran wires for the dinette slide through the slide on the opposite side, but real prior experience by others has shown that the factory workers did some strange things.
along that same line of thought, if the problem is a disconnected wire anywhere, I would think the slide would not work in either direction.
good luck in your hunt, and please report back.

John and Bob,
To me it becomes a little clearer each day, but ONLY after what feels like total confusion and WTF?
Then I think like the install guys putting a chassis and 4 slides on a kind of assembly line and the easy way would be to throw a few large gauge wires across the open area and move on. Test, release to next stage.
Easy before the bottom belly fabric is on and the trip pieces up.
For example, why the green and yellow wires across the coach to the opposite wall (I guess)
They go up through the passway in the bedroom-bathroom wall and then down?
Copper was cheap. Looking for my Control panel switch pics. My hunch is the door switch, but who knows..

I forgot that Carriage had both slide switches above the door. My 2010 has them in the flat wall area just past the curved wall behind the shower just as you go up the stairs.
Bob has 2009 Cameo, but not certain of model so do not know location of stair/shower/slide switches.
Bob, Jack has a Carriage FWS. The the solid wire Jack is pointing to is under the garbage can located in the counter’s peninsula area.
Bob, I am sending you a pm with my contact info.

The switch I am sure is good. I tried it on one of the other slides and worked fine. I have had the trailer a few months and it worked fine. When it stopped working was when a semi trailer clipped my side going down the highway. He hit the slide slightly and after that it didn’t work. I thought I had burned up the motor trying to get it to work so I replaced it. And yes if I reverse the wires it will run both directions. One thing i noticed is that slide going out was slower than before (new motor same Rpm). When I brought the slide in, it was very rough and clunky.
I really wish I could find a wiring diagram so I could locate the relay. Is Carriage still around to get ahold of?

There were 2 37ft Cameo models in 2009, I think 3 in 2010.
Sounds like a loose, compromised, or severed wire.
Run a new one (GRIN) sounds easy I know, the reality is way different than easily typed words.
Do you have a pic of the wiring to the motor you replaced?..yeah.. just 2 wires probably. No relay. hmmm

Bob,
did the slide ever work properly?
trying to figure out if it is something that the previous owner might have done wrong versus all was working well for weeks/months, then it quit coming back in.

John it worked fine for 3-4 months then quit. I looked for your PM but didn’t see one.

I just tried somethin new. I reverses the green and yellow at the switch and now doesn’t work either direction. Like had had said before, if I reversed them at the motor, it would work one way

Bob,
Are you back online? Did you get my PM?
Moving wires around on the switch can be dangerous in the sense that you need the battery connections in the proper place on that switch versus the wires that leave there going to the motor. no danger, danger, just makes things not work. My guess is that in your recent swap, you have connected wires from the battery to the motor side of the switch- thus nothing works.
That toggle switch sends + out one wire and provides a – ground connection coming back. Toggle it the other way and it sends the + out the other wire and – out the first wire. All through the long factory runs.
I am not where I can take a photo of what colors go where on the slide toggle switch. I can photo my 2010 built in September 2009, but that won’t be possible until I am back at the camper on Tuesday 8/22.
If you reverse wires at the motor it works one way – in or out?
If you reverse wires at the motor again, does it again work one way? the same direction as before? not at all?
It is not unusual to need a lot more battery power to bring the wall in than put it out. The “relay fix” gives you the most power from the battery regardless of the condition of your battery – much more than the oem setup can provide.
Lubricating the big black slide seals with 303 keeps them soft and more flexible, reducing drag.
