I have a question about an Allison trans in my 2012 3500 dually. While pulling my 36FW in the Rocky Mountains this last week, the truck started shuddering when pulling a grade. When it would finally get to the shifting point for the last gear it would stop. Has anyone had this experience? I know that Allison is not the manufacture of this trans any more. Chevy has bought the rights to this trans in 2007 or 8, and started building it for there trucks. They are still calling it an Allison though. Thanks for the help in advanced!! :(

Were you using Tow/Haul Mode at the time?

I have a 2009 GMC with the Allison Tranny. It seems that mine did a similar thing, although I wouldn’t describe it as a shudder. The engine just seemed to lug down on a long 6% upgrade., and the trans. temp and engine temp were pretty high. I wasn’t in tow/haul mode at the time. Once I went into Tow Haul, everything went back to normal. Of course, by then, I was over the summit, never did it since.

Doesn’t Isuzu make the Allison? No trans or engine problem with my 2011 GMC 3500. Pulls fine.

Isuzu does not make the allison trans. The Duramax is an Isuzu product. I have been on a Chevy forum and they are telling me it is the fuel filter causing the problem I am having. I will change the filter and see if take care of it.

For any of you with overheating issues try slowing till the trans downshifts to at least 3rd gear and get the engine to rev high, this will activate the fan clutch and bring the temp down. Safe travels

What percentage of fuel filter life does your DIC say is left?

The DIC says the filter has 45% life left.

I took the original filter down to less than 15% before replacing. Never had a problem. I wonder what the fuel filter is doing to your truck?

In case you didn’t know, there is a kit available on Ebay to make a little trap door in the right wheel well cover to ease replacing the filter in the future.

I got mine here for my 2011 and the 2013. Great place for a few other Duramax accessories that make fuel filter changes easier. Don’t forget to change the spin-on tranny filters periodically, too.

The link jdpm posted has the same kit and a few bucks cheaper. Both have free shipping.

I changed the fuel filter this weekend and it is doing the same thing as it did before the change. I seems to be getting worse, it is doing it on small grades now. Has anyone have any thoughts on this? It does it in tow mode and out of tow mode. I don’t notice it when not pulling the 5th wheel. :?

Have you checked the carrier bearing (center support bearing) and the U-joints for play? Sounds like it can be either one. I would check both before spending any more money. If the carrier bearing is worn it would do exactly as you describe and would be about a 50 to 60.00 fix.

Last month I replaced my 06 DRW Chevy carrier bearing for $73 at O’Reilly. Not a bad job, just mark the drive shaft to realign for reassembly and consider replacing the U joints, last time one went out 5k later. This is my second bearing with 280k miles. Also watch the DIC for the fuel filter change, it used to be based on engine revolutions and hours, nothing to do with how plugged the filter is. I change mine at every other oil change which is 10k and the DIC usually reads 33%. You can get 6 filters on e-bay for half price. The Duramax was developed by GM/Isuzu with joint engineering. Interesting about the Allison buyout?
For the OP go to a dealer and for $80 (negotiate) they will diagnose your problem and you can go from there.
