I talked to my Ford service manager and asked him about using biodiesel. He said don’t use it???? Never got a good reason why but I assume its sensor related. The following is the Minnesota state statute and as you can see in a year during the summer they will be selling only B-20. Have any of you been using BIO, any problems?

        Minn. Statute Chapter 297–S.F.No. 3683, Sec. 51 (2008)
All biodiesel fuel sold or offered for sale in MN for use in internal combustion engines must contain the following percentage of biodiesel fuel oil by volume. “Biodiesel fuel” means a renewable e, biodegradable, mono alkyl ester combustible liquid fuel that is derived fro agricultural and other plant oils (excluding palm oil) or animal fats.

        May 2009: 5 percent
        May 2011: 10 percent
        May 2013: 15 percent
        May 2015: 20 percent

The minimum content levels are effective during the months of April, May, June, July, August, September, and October only. The minimum content for the remainder of the year is five percent.
Details listed in Minn. Stat. 239.77

According to Ford you can use up to B20 in the 6.7L. Although the 6.7 tolerates more of a % of bio…you cannot be certain of quality. In regards to your dealership were they referring to pure biodiesel or biodiesel blend or any biodiesel?

In my home state all (or nearly all) pumps are B5 so I don’t have much choice but I’ve been using it w/o issue since 2008. I’ve never pumped B20 in my current truck. I’ve always used a cetane booster (PM-22) occasionally, drain the DFCM monthly or every other month, and change out the fuel filters every 12k-15k miles just to be on the safe side. There is alot of controversy and reported claims of HPFP failures due to fuel contamination in using biodiesel. How often this occurs and how much truth is behind it I don’t know.

In the unfortunate event of HPFP failure or other fuel related issue, Ford will not honor your warranty if they find the issue was caused by fuel contamination. How do us customers supposed to know if the fuel we’re pumping is good or not??? I wonder if your dealership has seen such failures? Hence, I’m really cautious where I stop for fuel.

It us great stuff- hides the true cost of posted fuel prices- less power, lower mpg’s, more regens, more def, requires more frequent oil changes.

FWIW…I think eventually the truth will find that most of the HPFP failures are related to DEF in the fuel tank….Ford made a bad choice putting the fill next to the diesel.

How do you know what you get? Wish I knew…but John D is on target as far as I am concerned. A little helps lubricity, but I fail to see the benefit of B20…

        Jim:

On our trip from British Columbia, Canada to Arizona, we did not use biodiesel on that leg of the trip. We have a 2011 Chevy which uses DEF. While in Indio, CA, we had a check engine light come on, and it was diagnosed by a GM dealer as the truck not automatically going into regen, so they did it manually. It did appear that the soot content in some type of canister reached a percentage greater than provided for in the emission control system, triggering the check engine light. We had a 1500 mile drive to get back home, so I was hoping for no issues from that point on.
We came up I-5 and I needed diesel near the Lodi, CA exit, so stopped in at Flying J. Both the commercial pumps and the automotive pumps were biodiesel. I filled the tank, but have never had to buy it since that time.
We got home ok, but again the check engine light came on. A dealer asked us about poor fuel. Anyhow, it was discovered that the DEF injector was faulty, and in the past month all has been ok, and I believe it was fixed. I don’t think the problem was with bio, as the problem developed prior to us filling with bio, but not sure about the poor fuel comment.

We’ve been running B-15 when we’re home and next year it will be B-20 so far we’ve not had a problem, but when my dealer said don’t use it I was a bit surprised.

Rick glad you got home OK and got your truck fixed–hope to run into you two again next season. We plan to be out west again, just not sure where.
