Well we have been spending alot of time over the last week or two doing research and perusing dealers for the right truck at the right price. I have really come to the conclusion that I really dislike dealing with car salesman and some dealers, I will say that sometimes I could use a shower after dealing with some of these people,
Now I know they are just doing their jobs and trying to make a living but I really dislike some of them trying to take advantage, but this time we have the control of the purchase we are doing a cash purchase for the truck , not like the old days when the car dealers held the cards, already peeved off a couple salesmen by calling their bluff….still no truck yet but we are working on it , we will keep you all informed ….

It is nice knowing what you want and the price your willing to pay.
When I was shopping for my latest Ram, I went to my local in town dealer, told them what I wanted, and what I was willing to pay. The sales guy literally laughed at me and went to get his manager. I pulled out the old netbook, pulled up their competing dealer that had the truck I wanted on the lot at a price that was close to what I was willing to pay.
When the sales manager came back and started his speil, I showed him the competing dealer and he said no way would he do that. I walked out.
5 hours later I was back driving my new Blue Ram, walked in and gave the manager the sales ticket to read.

They call on a regular basis asking me to come on in for a visit!

The Internet is a great tool for buying, like the above post said. If you do your research and know what you want getting a good price is a bit easier. When we were looking at buying a new trailer last year we started with our local RV dealer who sold Carriage. For almost a year we had been looking, researching and knew what we wanted. This dealer tried to switch us to either a different brand or a Carriage he had in stock. We got a list of 6 Carriage dealers, and emailed them a list of what we wanted. Only 3 came back with a price, and we took the best price.

I have been looking for a truck also. I agree about salesmen, I’ve already walked out of a couple of dealers.

Unfortunately, new seems to be a little out of reach. If I go new, I’d have to get a stripped down model, which I don’t want. I’ve been on autotrader.com looking for used trucks. There are some decent deals, but I’ll have to travel a bit. I’ve expanded my search to 200 miles. I found one that looks promising, though. I’m seeing it Tuesday.

I have had great luck with using the same approach that businesses use. I prepare a Request for Quote (RFQ) with the vehicle I want including all of the options, color, etc. I then send it to at least 3 dealers (I have sent to as many as 5 dealers when I purchased the Cameo). Some dealers won’t respond, others will want you to come in (to pressure you) but a good competitive dealer isn’t afraid to compete. Once you get your quotes back, I call each dealer and tell them that they are or aren’t in the competitive range. For the one’s in the competitive range, I invite them to submit a Best and Final Offer. Wait for the lower offers, pick the lowest and you have bought a truck. I generally prefer to order vehicles as it is cheaper for a dealer since they don’t have to finance the dealer stock. I have bought cars, trucks, my last two trailers this way and feel that I get a great deal.

It is really amazing to me the price differences for trucks equipted virtually the same way….our local dealer….the old scam, let you drive the most expensive on the lot, then throw the questions on how will you pay for said vehicle and how much do you want to spend….and it just peeves me off to no end knowing that they have headroom to give ….but won’t, we didn’t sign anything but we did put a hold on a truck I just wanted to hold them up with an insane demand for them to sell the truck while I waited to hear from other dealers.
Well I will be darned I actually received a call from Safford Dodge in Virginia today a sunday no less ! So gave the info on truck I am interested in and how we can do it without me driving down there from Upstate NY and just to show pricepoint difference here local dealer and safford approx $4,000 but we will see for sure where we end up $$$ wise and I am still waiting on quotes from 1 other dealer….tommorrow will be our D-day to see who gets the $$$$

Just a side note here, we are going all cash on this deal and we have our budget which we have the line of spending we won’t cross, and we WILL NOT go into debt of anykind to do this. My point here is cash is king and it gives me the upperhand on this deal soooo I WILL get the deal I want or I will just walk and find a dealer who will deal for cash. You know its funny to be in this position, this will be 2nd vehicle I’ve done for cash and its a great feeling knowing that I don’t have to get a loan and watch some of the managers move figures around to make it look like they are cutting you a great deal when actually you are still paying same amount. so lets see how we fare tomorrow

Well the good news we are now owners of a black 2012 Ram 3500 DRW, I kind of had to make them squirm a little bit,so I made them throw in a set of nerf bar rails and a few other goodies to get the deal done….I didnt have to do it but it sure feels good to push the sales people to work for the sale. We will be picking it up by the weekend….

Congrats on picking up that “NEW” Truck. Nothing like that new truck smell. Great combo with the Cummins and the 4:10 gears. When I ordered our F450 I went with the 4:88 gears to get the highest tow rating and if I had it to do over, I would go with the 4:10. My Trans shifts 3 times before I can cross an intersection from a stop. Although, It is nice going up and down those steep grades.

Thanks BWowner we did do a 200+ mile trip today to Oswego , NY to visit friends used cruise most of the way lots of hlls at 67-68 mph (faster than we would tow a 5th) turned an average of 13.8 mpg, could be better, 4.88 gears? wow, I will bet she will pull just about anything, what kind of mileage do you get?

I try to keep my towing speed at 62mph. That seems to be the best speed/mpg. Towing I get 9.2mpg and just running around town, truck only, 12mpg. I haven’t found a grade yet that it wouldn’t go up or down. I have done some grades if I had it to do over, I wouldn’t (white knuckles & Carol had to pry my hands loose from the steering wheel with a crowbar ha ha). If our paths ever cross, I’ll tell you a story about one we did that scared the heck out of me and we laugh about it now ( a pass between California & Nevada) and I was double-towing.

The DW hasn’t driven the truck yet….hehehe, she was mocking me for doing 67 the whole way going up north to visit, I have to keep explaining to her that going a few mph faster only saves a few minutes and besides we aren’t going to be in a hurry. When we went out to Yellowstone, Grand Teton NP and South Dakota in 2010 with our motorhome ,it was 12 hour days of driving ,exhausting to say the least, told her we won’t be logging that many hours in a day again. 65 and under is fine with me, let everyone else pass and figure in extra time to reduce hours on the road and enjoy the drive a little more.

Defiant, I’ve been following your thread about buying your truck. I bought my trailer six weeks ago, and I was planning on waiting a few months to buy the truck. Of course, I got antsy and we started our search early. I found a 2011 Ram 3500, and got it Monday. Our drive home with it was about 240 miles, we averaged 15 mpg.

I originally wasn’t looking at Dodge, but used one to tow my trailer home, got lots of good advice on some of the boards, and I feel I’ll be really happy with it.

        Good luck with yours.

Congrats on the new truck !! 15 mpg is great, what gear ratio?

4.10, the 3.73 is only rated at 12,900#. Once I’m loaded for full time, I expect that I’ll be over 15k. That 15mpg trip was 200+ miles of pretty much straight highway. I have no idea what it will be as my daily driver.

Your mileage will probably go up a little bit, mine’s already broken in. It’s got 19k miles.

When I bought my truck in 2006, I figured out what I wanted; model, options etc. and then did most of my haggling over the internet or on phone. Saved a lot of gas and aggravation. Be sure you get a truck that will do you justice. I wanted a work vehicle for towing and I got the Ford Lariet CC, diesel, dually with all the tow packages and a low rear end ratio.

When it comes down to two dealers that have what you want, have them email you their quote and then you can perhaps save a bit more. It does not matter if you are getting the truck serviced at the dealer you bought from or not. Don’t let them use this as a sales tool. All dealers must stand by the warranty. With a new truck, check the ratings. There are plenty of sites out there to compare against.

If you are getting a used truck get a CarFax report on it and have it checked out your mechanic. Check the internet for reliability.

        Good Luck! :geek:
