- When changing out a 12v dimmer switch, do I need to disable the 12v system while doing so? This a first time replacement so I will need to snip the wires on the old switch and then connect the new switch that has the proper pigtails. Is it OK to change it out without disabling the power to the switch?
Thanks
Posted: 11:28 AM – Nov 26, 2014You do not need to shut off the power, swap one wire at a time, just don’t touch the two wires together or to a ground…also you have to keep the polarity straight or the dimmer will not work…..RichPosted: 7:53 PM – Nov 26, 2014jv47 wrote:When changing out a 12v dimmer switch, do I need to disable the 12v system while doing so? Where did you buy your switch?
I would like to add a couple to circuits that presently don’t have them (like the reading lights over the head of the bed), and would like to keep the same type as I have now if possible. Thanks Sheff
Posted: 9:14 PM – Nov 26, 2014Sheff,The ome rotary ones are a lot better than the on-off with slider dimmers- they tend to flicker particularly when several are in use or a low battery. Yes, those at the bed were replaced long ago. Ditto on no need to disconnect; just don’t ground the power side or it will blow a 12 volt fuse in a hurry. Then you can finish the job.
Another thread had a source for oem rotary dimmers.
