Need a little help here….. I want to check the fluid level in the REAR Bigfoot leveller reserve tanks, but can’t seem to get either protective cover off. And
given where the tanks are positioned, how on earth do you get in there to top up the ATF?

On our Carriage I have to remove one screw from the front of the cover with a 5/16″ socket then the cover just pulls off. Only check the reservoir with the jacks all the way up and the level should be about 3/4″ down from the top. Hope this helps.

There is the 5/16″ screw then it takes a little maneuvering to get the plastic cover off. I have had mine off to replace the limit switches. I thought the hydraulic fluid level would remain the same no matter where the jacks were since the system had a dual acting cylinder ( power up and down )?
I’ll have to check the level with the jacks up and down the next time I use the RV.

Mine are held on with Velcro. I just pull them off.

This is from the Bigfoot manual. This is the only way I have checked mine.

Fully retract cylinders and check fluid level, using the manual retractor feature. If necessary, fill reservoir
to measure 3⁄4” from the top.

Also, go to this thread on this forum and see what JDPM said about filling his with the jacks down.

I just bought a pump oiler with a flexible snout to use for filling the reservoirs. I also got a small mirror with an extension handle for checking the fluid level on the rear jacks.

I speak from experience, if you fill the reservoir while the jacks are extended they will overflow when you retract them.

Also, Just FYI if anyone has the reservoir stopper design that is a black rubber cork with a curved straw through the middle for venting, there is an updated stopper available for a couple bucks that is green rubber with a small weep hole in it, no straw. This revised design is more water resistant preventing contamination of your fluid with water. My two rear jacks got water in the reservoir with the old design, presumably from driving in heavy rain. Quadra will mail you the revised stoppers for a couple bucks a piece, I forget how much shipping was.

OK, I’ll bite. How often should I be checking fluid levels?

I had never checked my Bigfoot fluid levels for over 6 years, then I noticed that a couple of the levelers weren’t retracting quite all the way. Bringing the fluid level up solved that.
