On our recent trip to MN we were having having a lot of chucking towing our Lifestyle.  We did not have this previously. For the most part we experienced fore and aft chucking the whole trip.

      Here is what has changed:

      * Moved springs to the lower 4×4 option holes to get the rig level.  Its near perfect level now hitched to the truck.

      * We had to buy a new truck.  We now have basically the same truck but its a 2019.  Same bed height, and we are using the same B&W Companion hitch. The GMC dealer installed a new B&W underbed hitch that is the same as what was in our 2016 truck.

Upon arrival we see that the disks on the Morryde pin rubbed a lot but don’t seem to be terribly worn (pic attached).  Is there anything else we should check for to see why its chucking?  We plan to buy the TrailerSaver TS3 .. just not sure when that will be ($$$).  Hensley Mfg tells us the TS3 will greatly reduce if not eliminate chucking.

Hopefully we can find a solution before our next trip.

      Thanks,

Can’t answer your question as to why the chucking but we have a TS3 and it’s an amazing hitch. We don’t have any chucking and the ride is smooth as can be.

Thank you Chip. We went ahead and ordered the TS3 yesterday. Hensley Mfg is great to work with. They even said they won’t start the 30 day free return timeframe until we take our next trip the end of August so we can tow with it.  Really excited to get it!

Just doesn’t seem like it would have anything to do with the truck .  Maybe it wasn’t chucking before because we were nose high but now that it’s level ?  It’s not horribly bad chucking but enough that it makes the drive rather uncomfortable .

          Thanks

            JLSR,

Given that the pinbox was new on a 2015 Lifestyle, I doubt you have any issues with the MoreRyde, but I would call them.

My 2010 Cameo got a MoreRyde pinbox upgrade in 2012.  I have 37k miles on the pinbox.  It was always riding level and was great for 5-6 years.  It began chucking pretty bad last year.  The white pucks were worn to the 3/4 inch where they suggest replacing them.   I replaced 4 pucks, 4 puck retaing nuts/bolts and the rubber spring 2 months ago – rides like new.  I made no changes to my 9 year old 47k miles air hitch.

If you go this route, make sure you get the rubber spring for the 5er weight.  A #5 is for a 5er weight of 14k to 18k.   Unfortunately you have take it apart to verify spring number, but the Model RPB72-770, just like mine, should have the #5.

I think lowering the nose of the 5er probably did expose the “old” rubber to more force than riding nose high and thus increase the severity of chucking, but hanging the hitch mounted positio  just an inch further forward or aft of your truck axle versus your previous truck would significantly change the truck’s reaction under load/unload so could also do that.

Good luck with the new hitch.

Thank you very much John.  We will also give MorRyde a call and send them the pic to see what they think.  Our rig doesn’t have a lot of road miles.  Best guess is probably under 10k over its life so far .  David says the new hitch appears to be in the same position as what it was on our 2016 truck; just slightly forward of the truck axle.  Hitch should arrive by this weekend so we may be taking the camper out for a little drive to test it out :-)  .

New TS3 arrived yesterday. Sure is a very substantial hitch! Makes our old B&W look puny.

We’re anxious to hook up and try it out but that will have to wait until the weekend. Looks like we’ll have to do some adjustments, it’s taller than the B&W.

It looks like the MorRyde pin box is doing its job by the looks of the wear/movement marks.  I can’t imagine leveling the rig would worsen the ride.  Its best to ride level so that’s good.

I had a bit of that and MorRyde was happy to help, however, there was not anything they could do.  The air hitch did help.  However, I firmly believe a lot of that chucking we feel in our tow vehicles is from the trailer bouncing like when going over expansion joints, etc.  The best way you can verify that for yourself is to go over a speed bump or something similar at a slow speed.  Just idle or coast over the bump and see how the trailer reacts in relation to the tugging back and forth motion you feeling the truck.  How does the trailer springs rebound in relation to what you feel in the truck?

I have 8k axles (not sure if you do) so the bounce may not be as much as with the standard 7k axles.  As I’ve have mentioned in the past, I’m still planning to install shocks on the trailer.  I believe they will help in the amount of bounce in the trailer due to just having leaf springs therefore reducing the transfer of that motion to the truck.

I went from a 2013 to a 2108 and the 2018 is a much better ride.  GM did move the hitch slightly forward on the ’18 and it has different shock.  Otherwise the truck chassis is the same as the 2013.

Keep us posted and congrats on that new hitch.  You will love it and your trailer with thank you.

Thanks for the info Phil, we did confirm with Morryde our pinbox is fine.  Also we have the 7k NevrLube axles.  We see the same for hitch placement on our ’19 as your ’18.

We got the TS3 installed in the truck and did our test drives this past weekend.  WOW what a difference in the ride! And NO CHUCKING!  David is very impressed with this hitch.  We took a drive on some side roads with several hills, uneven pavement, and bumps, plus a short drive on the highway.  Nothing was out of place when we got back home.  The test will be when we take our trip to Colorado in a few weeks.

We did have to move the pin box up one hole in order to get the rig level .  The TrailerSaver is much taller than the B&W, it came with the 3″ spacer on it.  We have 6 1/2 ” bed clearance as well.

Overall we are very impressed with the TrailerSaver hitch.  It was pricey but in the long run we think it will be well worth it.  Thanks all for the recommendations!
