- I started noticing a clunk noise on stopping and starting normally in the hitch area. I’m wondering if the MOR/ryde pin needed to have the hard rubber spacers replaced?
Our hitch looks and feels solid and I just got done cleaning and lubricating it.

Since the Mor/Ryde pin moves back and forth we just kinda wait for that sound from a stopped position and proceed from there.
Did you just transfer you old hitch from the previous truck in to the new one? Asking because I wonder why you would not have heard it before? Ours is a stiff hitch so we kinda expect it. Trailer Saver probably acts differently.
Posted: 12:23 PM – Sep 15, 2013I’m with comeupwithsomething on this one. If you didn’t notice it on your old truck and now you are hearing it from the new truck. It could be coming from the rails where the pins connect. You could try loosening the bolts and moving the rails just a hair to make a slightly tighter fit. Unfortunately there all kinds of places a clunking can be coming from and might be difficult to isolate it. Rule out the important stuff and if it’s still there then it’s possible it will never go away.Chip
Posted: 1:33 PM – Sep 15, 2013Good questions guys: We did move the Trailer Saver from the old truck to the new one, and no I didn’t have any noise with the old truck. We do have the Ford option for their under the bed rail system. Trailer Saver makes a companion part that works with this option. The Ford system itself is not movable, but it’s possible that I have some movement between the two Trailer Saver parts. I’ll take a closer look at that. I estimate we have about 20,000 miles on the MOR/ryde pin, that’s what I was thinking it was, but looking at it, it looks good.Posted: 2:39 PM – Sep 15, 2013I have a TS3 and the Ford mounting plate. When it was new, I had the same clunking. I called Hensley and they are aware of the problem. Said they were going to re-design how the hitch and Ford base mount together.
The bottom of my hitch has four tabs that drop in to corresponding slots in the Hensley manufactured Ford base. They are then pinned together. When assembled, there is a small gap between the tabs and the corresponding slots. This gap allows the entire hitch to move slightly. front to back, on the base, and hence the clunk. I removed the two pins closest to the tailgate, and inserted two 1/2″ washers to fill up the small gap between the tabs and base plate. I used two grade 8 bolts, instead of the pins, to secure the hitch to the base. This eliminated almost all of the gap and prevents the hitch from moving front to back. I no longer have any clunking on start and stop. This was Hensley’s recommended method of correcting their poor design of the hitch to base mounting points.
I had to try several different 1/2 washers to find ones that were just thick enough to fill gap in the mounting tab. Too thick and you can’t get them in.

Posted: 3:05 PM – Sep 15, 2013I just went out and checked and I can make the noise if I pull on the hitch. It’s the space between the hitch and Ford base mount. Not sure when you talked to them, but I just ordered the mount about a month ago. Doesn’t look like they’ve made the changes yet. But thanks, I know now what needs to be done to fix it.Posted: 4:20 PM – Sep 16, 2013Ken, I just came in from doing the fix that you suggested, I didn’t use the bolts, but I did slim the rear gold tabs with washers. Quick fix and I believe it will take care of the problem. Again thanksWhile I had the wrench in my hand I checked all the bolts on my hitch and had one that needed to be tighten, first time I’ve ever found one that was loose—it was a good thing I checked.
