- We plan to take I-40 west from Little Rock to California next week and I see that we will have some cold weather around Flagstaff, AZ. Is it OK to drive with the furnace on when it’s below freezing to keep the trailer from freezing up?Posted: 1:55 PM – Nov 30, 2013Traveler,
Are you concerned with temps for your comfort, or about pipes, etc.?
If you’re in the group that’s okay with propane on going down the road for keeping the refrig. running, you should be okay. Check to see if registers are covered by closed slides as that could be a concern. You’d have to run the generator also to provide power for the fan. Don’t think the flame would blow out.
It’d probably be okay, if you have to do it. Either way, be safe.
Posted: 3:50 PM – Nov 30, 2013The furnace blower runs on 12volts so you can forget the generator. I agree with the concern about how many vents would be blocked by the slides. If inadequate air flows through the system, the high limit switch will shut things down. Another concern I would have would be whether the furnace would spray light while rolling down the highway at 60mph. I know that the refer works fine, but don’t know about the furnace or water heater.Posted: 5:29 PM – Nov 30, 2013Why not drive further south and maybe take I-10 across?Posted: 5:33 PM – Nov 30, 2013Batteries won’t keep the blower fan running very long at extremely low temperatures.Posted: 8:23 PM – Nov 30, 2013Doesn’t the truck trickle charge the batteries? We ran ours for 2 days that way going to and from South Dakota. When we got close to Sioux Falls we did stop and crank the genny, but that was more to turn on a small electric heater that travels in the bath area. Can’t have a cold seat!Posted: 12:10 PM – Dec 01, 2013The truck does trickle charge the batteries though at a fairly slow rate. The wring from the truck to the batteries is fairly small so the current flow can’t be very great. Any electrical engineers out the who can run the calculations?Posted: 12:26 PM – Dec 01, 2013I have run my 36FWS on propane furnace when traveling several times and have had no problems. I set the temp at 45 degrees and usually open the cupboard doors under the kitchen sink and bathroom to help keep heat in these spaces. I stop every three hours to stretch and check the temp in the RV. If you are going to be in very cold areas zero or so, you may want to winterize to be safe.Posted: 11:31 PM – Dec 10, 2013Traveler wrote:We plan to take I-40 west from Little Rock to California next week and I see that we will have some cold weather around Flagstaff, AZ. Is it OK to drive with the furnace on when it’s below freezing to keep the trailer from freezing up?We went through a bit of this not long ago. We took I-10 west out of Texas when the cold front moved in. The road iced, a semi jack-knifed, and we sat for four hours near exit 173. We did not winterize, but drained the tanks before we left and did not run the heater while driving. We did run the heater at the rest area when we stopped for the night. We didn’t have any issues en route with any of the systems.
Posted: 9:09 AM – Dec 11, 2013We’re almost to Bakersfield, CA we did go down’ to I-10. We stayed just ahead of the bad weather, but did have some cold. Down to the 20 at night, but the rig did a good job of keeping us warm with no problems. I see this AM that Flagstaff is -6, glad we didn’t go that way.B.W.Gentry
