Fantastic Fan Install and Wiring

Installed fantastic fan above shower today. Biggest pain was removing the old dicor sealant. Took about 2 hours start to finish plus or minus. The lip on the fantastic fan on top was not as big as the old skylight, so I had to add quite a bit of dicor to cover up a couple of places where the rubber roof stretched outside the smaller lip area (from my activities removing old skylight). A 3/8″ hole drilled first through the framing then through the hidden metal stud in the ceiling allowed the wires from the fan to run to the power feed for the light. Fairly easy if tedious job

Observation: I do not understand why Carriage used wire nuts instead of butt connectors for 12V connections. The light above the desk in our slide used to flicker, when I removed it the wire nut was too hot to hold and potentially had signs of melting. When I removed the wire nut the copper was green and obviously arcing from bad connection. IMO wire nuts have no business in RV’s.

Also of note: Both the original inner and outer skylight domes are sealed to the exterior roof skin. So, if the interior dome is still good there will be no water intrusion to the interior of the camper. I was not aware the inside done had a lip and was also sealed to the exterior, so I was in a real hurry to get this done for fear water was running into the ceiling. Just FYI if anyone gets a crack in exterior dome.

We only use heat shrink butt connectors but I can understand why wire nuts are used in production. They accept a large range and combination of wire sizes and only need one crimp. This simplifies the process through the supply chain to the person on the shop floor.

We had to redo “a few” butt connectors in our Outdoors RV trailer:
        – crimped missed the metal barrel
        – wasn’t crimped enough
        – connector was undersized i.e. 2-10ga wires pushed into a 10ga connector.

We are getting off topic here, but this winter I replaced the ‘scare’ lights on both front corners of our Cameo. We also recently replaced the side marker lights with the turn signal variety. In both cases, one side of the RV used wire nuts while the other side used crimped connectors. I have concluded that different workers on either side of the rig, with different theories on wire connections

Clearly if someone set out to build a better RV there are many easy avenues to achieve substantial improvements. Too bad Carriage sold their name off to Crossroads. Someone here said they knew who bought everything at the auction of their factory assets. I don’t think Crossroads did much with the Carriage brand. Somebody ought to put the band back together and challenge DRV. There is a lot of space in the 5W market between 70k and DRV’s 120k. Carriage ought to be filling that void.

Edit: If the band ever got back together they would likely need independent dealers that were not contractually obligated to sell from either of the two big guys. This might be difficult to achieve.
