HELP!!!!! Hope some one is still up. We’ve been smelling a strange smell for a couple days. Tonight I kind of pinpointed it to the vent under the stairs. About 10 min. later the smoke started pouring out the vent, tore the wooden vent cover off while the wife was unhooking the power. Thank God we were home. It was coming from a black plastic box that had a couple very hot spots. The smoke has cleared and cooled down and we’re running on batteries. First…what is the box and second are we safe for the night. Of course it in a very difficult spot to get to.

Hope all is OK. I am up but don’t know the answer so guess you will have to wait for the real experienced guys to wake. Good Luck and hope it is something simple.

That is the transfer switch. Mine melted when we were not in the camper, very scary. You are fine off of the batteries, but your charger will not be working. The transfer switch is all 110v and decides if the power is coming from the generator or shore power, neither of which will work now. You can bypass it if you are comfortable doing so. I went back with a progressive transfer switch, it is in a metal box and seems to be built much better.

Yes, Carriage installed that junk in our rigs. If you do not use a generator, you do not need the switch.

We can walk you through the repair on this, if you like.

I found that the screws that lock the wires in get loose in the electrical boxes causing arcing and high resistance. with the power off I open all electrical boxes and tighten them all at least once a year. I am amazed how many need to be snugged up.

THANK YOU!! I love this forum! At least now I know what it is. It is wired for gen. but don’t have one. Not able to do work myself, operating with just one hand right now. Looks like a PITA to get to, water line right in front then the sewer storage tube and I guess you get to it from side storage. Full timers so hope I can find a shop that will work on it. Most are usually 2-3 weeks out.

Access it through the storage compartment. Bypassing it is as easy as putting heavy duty wire nuts on. Not a major job at all, but I think you will need 2 hands. You can run an extension cord from shore power to your converter so that you can charge the batteries. If you were closer, I would run over and do it for you. Maybe a handy neighbor or somebody could help out.

Mine had the transfer switch installed from the factory, installed on bulkhead on forward compartment. I had dealer install a pure sine inverter when unit was new and they relocated and re-used the transfer switch, and located it behind the centre compartment, near the sub-panel for the inverter. In order to check the screws I need to extract the sewer hose pipe from the rig. Why would someone do this?

All fixed. Called Oak Park RV repair here in Salem OR, he was here in 30 min. and was done in an hr. Just removed burnt box and wired direct. May replace transfer switch or just put connections in a box. Total cost $95. Works for me. Thank you all for your support, especially moo2613.
