- And now for something completely different.
Went to hitch up this a.m. to get outta cold (20 degree) Kansas and head back in to Texas.
The passenger side post on the front landing legs broke where the square tube attaches with a bolt. The square tube fits over the pin.
Twice before, that bolt had to be replaced as it had broken, so assume there’s pretty good torque there. This time, the pin thru which the bolt passes, broke. Thankfully it was only about 1″ short of hitching height and we forced the truck under and got it locked in. We traveled safely to Sherman, Tx. just north of Dallas and will drive on in to our National Wildlife Refuge (Attwater, appox. 60 miles west of Houston) tomorrow.
Thinking we can manually put the passenger side leg back down and know the other side still works off the motor. Question is, how to fix it. Maybe weld a longer piece and redrill for the bolt?
Any way, asking to see if anyone has experience with this? Neighbor at the park in Kansas said this had happened to him and he had to replace the landing legs as Lippert (I think that’s the maker) doesn’t sell parts. Seems like a waste, and there’s got to be a more economical fix.
As always, thanks for sharing and hope you all have a wonderful holiday season!
Posted: 10:33 AM – Dec 24, 2013We also broke bolt on passenger leg and I replaced the bolt.
Ours broke when unhooking It’s was not a good feeling.
I though the pin was heatreated and be hard to drill or weld.
I am thinking something wrong with that leg. Just my 2 centsHope everything works out.
Posted: 10:35 AM – Dec 24, 2013When I needed parts for our front legs, found the manufacturer name was on upper houseing of gear (buried under paint). 05 Carri-Lite gear was by Ultra Fab and they were great to work with for parts.Posted: 6:35 PM – Dec 24, 2013I’ll look for the name. When we landed here today, we unhooked after manually (using vise grips) adjusting the leg. It turned pretty hard which may be a clue to why it failed. We’ll have access to a forklift while here so it should be relatively easy. Thanks so much to all, and Merry Christmas!
Posted: 1:40 PM – Apr 11, 2014Here we are, 4 months later, and leg is still not working. Me, the big dummy, waited to try the gear set I’d bought from Vantage Co. (the landing leg maker). Still all bound up. I ordered a replacement front leg assembly and expect it’ll arrive on Tuesday.Hope we get it completed in time for lift off from our volunteering gig, next Saturday.
