I really like my Garmin GPS—BUT—updating is a real pain. Map updates takes forever and normally I need to try several times to get it right. The unit I have now is two years old and there was a message that I needed to update my “subscriptions” it’s the app that gives you updated traffic, fuel prices and a lot of other good stuff, I like it and use it all the time. For the last 90 minutes I’ve gone from signing in to finding the needed information connecting my GPS and showing that it’s my unit and going around in circles.

I like my GPS but what have others found it’s like in updating your GPS, and while I’m at it how do you like your GPS. I think with Christmas coming up to put a new RV GPS on my wish list.

I like my Magellan Roadmate 1700. It’s not perfect but I’ve found it fairly reliable at least as much as the others I have had. I really need the 7″ screen as I don’t wear glasses to drive but I do need them for reading and to see smaller screens. It’s also quite user friendly and a small learning curve.

We also had a Garmin and yes it was a pain to update it and I didn’t like the small screens so we sold it and bought a Rand McNally TND 500 which worked well for us, Recently we purchased the Rand McNally RVND 7710 a few weeks ago ,we have not had a chance to use it yet . The 7710 s have dropped in price quite a bit since they have come out with the RVND 7720 LM but the price wasn’t worth the extra $$$$ for the new features they added to it . The RM gps’s update very well without any glitches thus far

I’ve been using a nüvi 885T (now a discontinued model) for the past four years. Over all the unit has worked well although the “speak commands” speech recognition feature proved to be buggy. I purchased a MSN Direct subscription but then Microsoft dropped support (not Garmin’s fault). I did purchase the nuMaps Lifetime option which has paid for itself.

The screen size works fine for me. I have mounted the unit on the dash to the left of the steering wheel in my GMC 2500HD. (In two states, OR and MN, it’s illegal to mount anything unit on top of the dash) Complaints from my spouse about not wanting to listen to another woman in the truck give driving directions (the unit’s nickname is “Gigi”) forced me to leave it on mute all the time. Sometimes I wish it were that easy for…well, you understand.

True, updates are typically very large and can take a very long time to download over many RV park wifi systems. We have a Verizon MiFi but I don’t use that for downloads to avoid hitting our monthly data cap. However, I’ve found that some RV parks allow us to connect directly to their broadband via Ethernet so what would take hours only takes minutes. I have used public libraries with fast (and free) connections to download updates. None of the updates are ever so critical that they can’t wait. I download updates through “myVerizon” account with the unit plugged in via the supplied USB cable. I’ve found the instructions to be easy and straightforward.

Garmin wasn’t always so nice to play with. As a Mac user, Garmin started out with Mac support then dropped it for years – now it’s back again and has been pretty simple plug-and-play.

I considered other units but in the end like the regular updates Garmin puts out. I expect in a few years I’ll be buying another Garmin. Bottom line is that with a fast connection I’ve had no problems.

I have free lifetime map updates. I had to download some free software from Magellan to do it.

I have an older Garmin Nuvi that works fairly well, except for current updates due to not enough memory. I contacted Garmin to see what they would recommend for an RV and there are now dezl 560 LT that was recommended and a larger screen dezl 760LMT. Though these are primarily for trucks, they do have an RV mode. I am hoping to get one later on. In the mean time if anyone does purchase either of these can you please let me know your recommendations.

There are so many out there now, it is hard to put them side-by-side. I did see a post somewhere not to get the Magellan.

I have a Magellan RV9165 and it is easy to update. You load a small application on your computer and it manages software and map updates.
I also like the 7″ screen. The extended mount puts it right above the heater vents and makes it easy to reach.

I have Garmin Dezl 560 and love it. In RV mode it will keep you off streets you should not be on, but it is not perfect. Has lots of nice features like showing you what lane to be in for the next turn, etc. Would get it again. It also came with lifetime maps. It does take a while to update, the map data files are fairly large.

Thanks. That is good to hear. What things don’t you like about it that make it “not perfect? Also, when it comes to bridges, does it just notify you that one is coming up or actually have the capability to route you so that you won’t encounter any obstacles. I will want a unit that keeps me on the proper route for my RV.

After a week Garmin got back to me on how to update my “subscriptions”. Come to find out my map updated were on my new Garmin, but the “subscriptions” for this Garmin were on an account that was for an old Garmin. I had changed e-mail addresses since buying the new Garmin so all my request were going to that old address.

It took Garmin some time, but they stuck with it and solved the problem, I’m impressed and thankful. :D

Garmin is a great company to work with. I have installed their marine electronics in many boats and always had great factory support. Even it was an obvious owner mess up.
For right now my TomTom is doing ok. Maps udated regularlly.
