- I know this issue has been discussed on “the other forum” but I don’t recall anyone ever acutally posting how they fixed the situation.
The situation I’m speaking of is holding tank odors getting on the interior of the coach due to the vent pipe (the one that goes from the holding tanks up through the roof) being installed too long or having fallen down in to the tank further than it should be. The result is the holding tank odors have to vent back through the sinks or vacuum breakers under the sinks. I get this situation when my grey tank gets close to full. I have never had it happen with the black but I don’t think I have ever had the black (62 gallons) close to full.
Our Cameo only has one pipe coming through the roof and it is to my understanding that Carriage joined the black and grey together so that only one pipe is sticking up through the roof.
I’d like to be able to pull the pipe out of the grey tank and reinstall it to be sure it is not installed too long. I have no idea how it was installed at the factory or how hard it would be to remove and and reinstall it. Has anyone done this? Thanks, PhillipPosted: 11:25 AM – Apr 14, 2013On my 36max1 I noticed a sewer smell in the coach and especially in the basement. I emptied the basement and removed the door side of the rear wall to expose the sewage system black tank and plumbing. Both the grey and black tank vents are here with the black coming directly down through the basement floor and into the top of the black tank. They cut a hole in the floor that I believe was a little small and vibrated against the vent pipe. I cut a larger hole in the floor and inspected the fitting on top of the black tank. You could wiggle it a little and see the seal had been broken. I believe what was goiing on is when I would drain the black tank, I would refill it with flush water and get it a little too full to the point you could see the water backing up into the toilet which is about 3 ft up from the top of the black tank. Too full and it would force stuff out through the connection on the top of the black tank. After scrapping , sanding, and cleaning considerably, I put a pile of black adhesive sticky gooey stuff all over the connection area and let it dry. Seems to have worked but I am not filling the tank as full either.
Posted: 4:18 PM – Apr 15, 2013I had a smell problem when the tank was getting full. I pulled the wall down and checked all the fitting and could find no problem. I ran a water hose full blast into the cleanout and soon found out (when it splashed back at me rather quickly) that the shower drain pipe was 1/2 blocked up. Apparently this was causing the system to belch periodically. Once cleaned out, no further problem.Posted: 3:17 PM – Jul 20, 2013If you belong to or follow the Yahoo groups Carriage RV forum, you may have recently read of a Carriage owner forgetting to shut off the black tank flush. The result was the black tank filling up and “fluid” going up the vent pipe to the roof. The BIG problem is the fact that Carriage did not install the pipe long enough to extend through the roof decking. Therefore when the fluid came up the pipe, the cavity between the ceiling and roof decking was flooded. I can’t imagine. Their insurance is NOT paying for this but that is all another story.
My point is that we all should check the black tank pipe for its termination point. I already know that ours needs attention. It doe NOT extend through the roof deck but barely above the interior ceiling. I have already filled the void around it and the ceiling with putty. Now I will put a very well sealed flexible extension on the pipe so that it can extend to the actual rim of the roof vent cap. God forbid if I was to ever have a similar situation, then the fluid would go outside the rv roof and not ruin the ceiling.
Keep in mind that most Carriage RVs use one vent on the roof that takes care of both holding tanks. So any of us could have a similar situation if even a grey tank filled up due to a leaking faucet while away. For that reason, when we are gone for more than 2 or 3 hours, we turn off the city water and never leave a black tank flush hose connected to the faucet. Also, for better protection, we have installed a shut-off valve inside the utility service center. That way, the water flow is secured behind a “locked” compartment. Safe and happy travels.
