We stopped for fuel, and there was a CAT scale, so I decided to get weighed. I didn’t take the time to unhook and weigh the truck solo, so I don’t have the whole picture, but what I did learn was interesting.

We were running with a typical load. Full fuel (2 tanks, about 70 gallons), about 1/3 tank of water, 1 propane tank full, 1 empty. the DW and the dogs with me in the truck. The front axle weighed 5180. The rear axle was 7360. Trailer axles were 12640 and my combined gross was 25180.

The front was 320 below the rating, the rear, 1900 below. I’m more than 2700 lbs. below the gross combined rating. That’s the good news. The truck, front and rear added together, at 12540, is 340 lbs. overweight. I’m not sure how the truck can be over, when the axles (individually) are a combined 2200 below their gross ratings.

I don’t think that I can lighten the pin by enough to make the truck “legal”. I can shift a few things around, but the washer/dryer is up front, and I can’t move that.

        Any thoughts, suggestions?

Not too bad at all in my book. Burn a few gallons of fuel and flush the toilet a few times and I suspect that you are better than 80% of the folks on the road. Just keep 5er brakes adjusted and all the tires aired up to your true weight.

The gvwr always has the caveat of never exceeding any axle weight rating, as does the combined weight rating. Something salesmen always gloss over.

I have never been able to get my GVWR in spec. I have the same problem, the pin is too heavy. I have rationalized this by noting that GVWR is likely more applicable when the truck is carrying a load in the bed, and not towed. While I don’t know what limits GVWR, I’m guessing its the breaks. Since the trailer has its own breaks, I’m happy if the GCWR is in limits as well as all the axels.

I found another scale near the campground, and weighed the truck today. The trailer total weight is 16,230, about 400 lbs. below max gross. The pin weight is 3590.

Since everything else is within the ratings, I won’t worry too much about the truck being overweight. I will still try to clean out the front closet and storage and save a few pounds. It never hurts to lose a few pounds.

If you look at most cars, the larger brakes are on the front because that is where the load is, from both the engine and front seat passenger load perspective. Just the opposite is true in pickups – the load and larger brakes are on the rear axle. Each axle needs the brakes to stop the weight that it carries or it puts undue loads on the brakes on the other axles. Will anything give out is anyone’s guess, but as Zach suggests, being so close to limits you are in a lot better shape than many.
