This is the first 50amp cord I’ve had that after several years is all kinky. I have had cords on boat and other RVs and they never have got all twisted like this one. I keep it on a reel, but I’ve done that before with no problem, anyone else has this?

Man! I can’t imagine a 50 A cord getting kinked. Mine is a larger diameter than a 1″ water hose! I have a time curling it into a radius tight enough to get into a 5 gal bucket (which is how I store mine). No help from me Traveler.

Never seen anything like it! Something inside has let go, beats me as to what?

Check the resistance in the wires, (Ohm it), and see if 1 leg is lower than another. It looks like its been run over by a forklift. This can crush the wires and possibly break them.

It’s not been run over, at least not that I know of. There are a lot of kinks some bigger than others. One other thing about this cord compared to others is it really gets stiff in the cold, they all do, but this one if it’s real cold out (20 degrees or colder) I can only store it in the bed of the truck, can’t even roll it tight enough to fit into a storage compartment or back on the reel. It still works fine, but I think it’s time to replace it, now to find a good one.

I have seen extension cords and even air hoses do this and usually due to being PVC or vinyl jacketed. Not all 50 amp cords are created equal. The jacket material plays a big part in how flexible a cord is. Neoprene or silicone would be my first choice. The finer the strands the wire has also plays a big part in it. I think the jute fillers inside the cord also make it much more pliable. The cord you have in the pic looks like it has a very brittle, stiff jacket. I would guess the wire inside is still fine. I have seen welding leads that were very flexible but the wire strands were very fine and lots of them.
