It’s our first night out for our winter travels, question for Ford owners. We pulled in dropped the back jacks but left the trailer hooked up with the cord to the truck hooked in. Done it many time with our old truck, but every time we open the truck door it turns the outside lights on the trailer, do we need to un-hook the cord from the trailer to the truck with a Ford?

I have the 08 F-450 and when I unlock the doors, the lights come on for a short time then go off after a minute or so. I’m assuming that since you remained plugged in, the trailer lights came on as well, but should go off when the truck lights go off. Whenever we stay hooked up to the truck for an over-niter, we always stay plugged in.

Thanks B.W., that’s what we’ve done in the past, but I was thinking I might get up in the morning ready to head out and the batteries would be drained. So I unplugged, just to make sure.

I have a 08 Ford F350. There is no problem leaving the plug in but I always unplug it. I would not want to get up the following am and find a dead truck battery if something failed in the wiring system. Only takes 30 seconds to plug in.

Ford has a relay to prevent the battery from being drained due to a trailer or RV being plugged in, I have left trailers plugged in for days without a problem.

We have always stayed plugged up to the truck when make an overnight stay and then go in the morning, we have not had a problem yet.

Read your owners manual.See if it saids anything. I have a 2001 F250 ford 7.3 diesel. Their is a relay under the hood that breaks the 12 volt connection from the truck to trailer when the ignition switch is off. When you have it on , it lets the alternator charge the batteries.
