I have a new 2015 Silverado, pulling a 16,000 LBS fiver. I am trying to find out how GM owners pull there units Thanks for your help.
Do you pull it Tow/Haul up to what speed
Do you pull it in over drive
Do you pull it 5th gear
        Do you use cruise control
What mpg are you getting at what speed

I pull with the trailer mode on all the time. The engine adjust to the needs of the towing, shifting up when necessary down shifting when on steep down grades. I am currently finishing a 10,000 mile road trip and have averaged 12.5 miles per gallon.

Not a GM owner, but in rolling hills it is better not to be in cruise, or to take it out on the way up (so cruise does not force a downshift or a flooring of the pedal, and as you approach the bottom (so you can Coast over cruise speed or gain a bit of steam before you hit the uphill. You don’t have to be a rolls down hill, but can hardly make it up the next one, but that is what maximizes the mpg’s.

Mpg’s depend so much on head wind and, even if no wind, the wind profile of your rig. Fuel quality and bio percentage also play a role. If you rig has low numbered gears, 3…. verses 4…., you may want to lock out an overdrive top gear on occasion, but not all the time.

Same with tow haul. On the flats all the time. On steep downhill absolutely. Going up hill not necessarily. Modest rolling hills at highway speeds, probably not, unless you absolutely do not want to hit the bottom of a hill going a bit above the speed limit or your normal cruise speed.

2013 GM dually extended cab 3.73 rear end
2014 LS36fw scaled at 15340 for our typical trips. Pin weight is 3400lbs GWVR is 19k
I find that the trucks sweet spot for staying in 6th is 67mph on level roads.
I use cruise control traffic conditions permitting
I always engage the tow haul mode and exhaust brake once hitched-up
Using tow/haul mode is supposed to reduce the amount of shifiting the tranny does in traffic in-turn keeping tranny temps lower.
        I get between 9-10 mph at 67mph.

Have you scaled your trailer to see its actual weight? Is 16k your GVWR or your GVW? You might include 2011 and 2012 Duramax owners, too. The frame, engine and drivetrain are the same as current models back to 2011. Including them may get you more responses. Phillip

Yes I did scale the unit, it was loaded for our west trip that we are on now. Cat scales front jacks on one platform weighed in at 4,900 LBS. the wheels where on the other platform and that weighed in at 10,800 LBS. for a GW 15,700 LBS. Yes any GM owners 2011 -2013 could also be helpful.

My setup/situation is very similar. I have a 2012 year model of the same truck, trailer is a 2015 37cksl. All else is essentially the same. Regarding Tow-Haul mode, I like to tow around 62-65 mph, but as Phillip said, you have to get around 67 mph for the tranny to upshift. So when I get to my preferrred tow speed i’ll momentarily disengage Tow-Haul mode to get the tranny to upshift at the lower speed then re-engage it. If you try this when the tranny needs to be in the lower gear (e.g. going up an incline) it won’t upshift so the tranny will always do what the truck needs.

I also second what someone said about using cruise control in hilly terrain, especially where there are shorter hills. The tranny will tend frequently upshift/downshift as you go up and down. When in this type of terrain I take it out of cruise control and allow my speed to go up when going downhill to gain a little momentum for going back up the next hill.

I don’t have a GM truck but I have a 2015 F350. The truck has a 6 speed transmission, I lock the truck out of 6 gear and run the tachometer at around 2k. I am still learning the truck but I want to keep the truck in its power band. I personally don’t want the lowest rpm as I am afraid it will lug the transmission and cause damage.

        Hope this helps

On our 2015 Chevy Silverado diesel, I would use tow/haul mode for pulling our Cameo. With our 3,000 lb truck camper, I don’t use tow/haul.

You can check transmission temperature on your display screen (DIC) on the dash. Like Eric, I believe the shift points in tow/haul mode are suited for hauling a heavy rig without damage to the transmission.

2015 GMC Denali diesel – always use tow/haul and the exhaust brake. I use cruise control when feasible – not in the hills! My sweet spot is around 107 km/hr (66 mph). I don’t track mileage – it scares me!!

2015 Silverado HD dually pulling a 2014 Lifestyle 32FW weighing about 17K with about 3400-3500 on the pin. Tows great! I drive 58-60 mph and always use the tow/haul mode. As for mileage, most of the time it is between 10.5 and 11 mpg. On a rare occasion, I might see something close to 12 or as low as 9.2 mpg.

I am towing a 2014 Lifestyle 34SB with a 2015 3500 HD SB SA crew cab. My trailer weighs 15000 lbs and I generally travel between 58-60 MPH. I run with Tow Haul on at all times and also engage the braking system. Generally I am in cruise but as others have mentioned where it is to hilly I will disengage the cruise. My average fuel economy is 11-11.5 MPG on a US gallon. Occasionally I will hit 12 and if I hit a head wind I have dropped to 10 MPG. I am 15,000 miles into my latest trip and my average mileage to date is at 11.6 MPG.
