Main Slide Blowing Fuses

      We experienced two slide issues on our recent trip.  Since the issues are distinct, I’m posting them separately.  The rig is a 2008 Cameo 32SB2.

      The large living/dining room slide is occasionally blowing its 15A fuse.  Since it seems to me that 15A is marginal for operating the large slide, I replaced it with a 30A fuse.  We just completed a 4-week/4,000 mile trip and it blew the 30A fuse once, out of a couple of dozen in & out operations.

      Do we need to make the two-relay upgrade?

      Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        I’m no electrician but it could be a ground issue.  I have a 2009 36 SBQ and replaced my kitchen slide motor. I bought my motor from Leisure RV in California. When I bought it in 2021 they only had the 30 rpm available. It goes very slow but that doesn’t bother me.  Going to have my 90 rpm rebuilt if I can.

          There is a tiny wire leading into the motor itself and the motor is only rated for 15 amps. that 30 amp fuse on wire sized for 15 can cause a fire, but I digress.

          relays and heavier wire will always help and almost always cure that issue, but there are a few other things to try.

          first, the large slide seals may have become hard and inflexible with age causing a lot of extra drag. Have you lubricated the large slide seals with 303 or something similar?

          The other thing to check is the mounting bolts on the motor itself. On some of the older models (my 2010 included), had mounting bolts that were too long so motor could move and bind up.  Easy fix if threads in motor were good was add a lock washer or flat washer. However, several of my bolts had threads that were pretty buggered up so I bought new fresh thread bolts.  Yes, slightly shorter because I had access to a great supplier that had that odd length, but that is not the point. Even with the new bolts, the threads in the motor plate stripped out because 5hey had been lose and wobbling so long.  It was only one so I just left it in place – if/when that one falls out it won’t get into any gearing.

          the relay/heavier wires direct from battery (with fuse at battery) will definitely overcome the first item.  It would probably overcome #2 short term, but if that motor is loose, it needs to be tightened up before you have bigger problems.

            Thanks John.  I hate it when manufacturers use tiny wiring when real work needs to be done.

            I guess I need to spend some quality time in the belly of our Cameo after the weather warms up in the Spring.
