- Had a friend who is an electrician come over and the fuse that partially tripped was bad. Replaced that (he told us something interesting- to keep fuses healthy, trip and reset them twice a year). So went about finding what the smell issue was and my domectic microwave has bit the dust. I would love to replace it wit a convection MW, but it’s an in cabinet (over the stove but not an exhaust one- have the noise hood for that.) Space is limited due to being built in. I have about 22″ wide I can work with if I trim out some edging, 18″ deep and 16 1/2″ tall. any suggestions? I am in Alaska, and shipping can be an issue, but something I may be able to work around with my local RV repair place I have a good relationship with. Has anyone modified a cabinet for a MW range vent to be secure and fit?Posted: 3:37 PM – Aug 11, 2016Fyi, these microwave units are not special for RV. Spenards in Anchorage usually has several household over-stove and counter top units in store that could be measured. Search the topic of appliances on this site. There is quite a bit of info there about how to replace them. Also easy to add an outside vent, but that is an RV item. Almost all over stove models can be installed vented up, vented out, or vented back into the kitchen- requires changing the fan motor position before install – easy. Lifting a microwave, not so easy.Posted: 8:28 AM – Aug 12, 2016As an electrician, I don’t agree with “tripping” a breaker twice a year. When a breaker is “tripped” the amp rating of the breaker decreases with every “trip”. Not much, but decreases. Turning off and back on or exercising it, would be fine in my view….RichPosted: 5:02 AM – Aug 13, 2016subframe wrote:As an electrician, I don’t agree with “tripping” a breaker twice a year. How is turning the breaker off and on different than tripping it? Could be different terminology but mean the same thing. I would never intentionally overload a circuit to “trip” the breaker. But, I would “flip/throw” the breaker to exercise it.
Same thing or not?
Posted: 6:17 AM – Aug 13, 2016“Tripping” usually means that the circuit has been shorted or overloaded. Turning it off and on just exercises the mechanical components which is not a bad practice…RichPosted: 9:40 PM – Aug 20, 2016We replaced our Sharp microwave/convection with a larger one when ours died. Dutch did eek out the cabinetry a bit to make it fit and also cut a hole in the insulation at the back to accommodate the deeper microwave and we’ve been very happy with ours. He used the existing vent pieces on top and bottom and made them less wide which also gave us more room. We bought ours at a Sharp retailer but if you search using the cabinet dimensions you can find something close and if a bit larger, maybe you can do what we did. Keep us posted. Hugs, DiB.W.Gentry
