Our 2008 Cari-Lite has two areas that always have a mold / mildew issue. The kitchen cabinets over the sink and the bedroom closet always have a mildew smell. We can’t see any signs of mold on the interior and have scrubbed with 1 cup Clorox/gal of water multiple times. I though it might be in the space between the bottom shelf and exterior of the shelf where the recessed light fixtures reside, but I can’t see any mold.
In the bedroom closet, the smell seems to be coming from the bottom drawer. Again, we removed and treated with the Clorox solution, but still have the smell.
Any ideas? Thanks! Jonesey – Renton Highlands, Washington

If it is these cabinets that smell, it cold be the dicor on the roof pulling back from the metal transition bracket on each side of the 5er where the slope of the roof changes. The roofing material underneath is cut, so screw holes and both leading and trailing edge of bracket need a good seal. There is also a long metal trim that runs the full length of the 5er where the roofing material is attached to the side of the 5er. This should have a good bead of non-lapping dicor or silicone along the top. Finally, if you have a slideout in the bedroom tv area, it could be a tear in the roofing material or some other gap in sealant.
If the closet you talk about is the forward closet across the front, the water leak is most likely coming from the seal between the fiberglass cap and the roof or walls of the 5er. Pay particular attention to the condition of the non lapping dicor or silicone at the gutters and downspouts, but i suspect the 4-6inch tape across the top has need for some self leveling dicor along leading and trailing edges, and maybe at the area where the screw heads might be seen through the tape. The same with the non lapping dicor or silicone along the metal vertical trim .
The kitchen has most but not all of the possible sources above. In addition, any roof penetration near the kitchen cabinets could be the culprit. Small water leaks can run horiziontally quite a ways and not be seen until it collects in a vertical drop. Ideas- afte you have checked the items listed for the bedroom, also look at the condition of the self lapping dicor around the kitchen fan or skylight or any other nearby roof penetration. In theory such a rooftop leak should be isolated to the rooftop.
Check the condition of the roofing material on the slide hen it is out, but also run the slide in and go inside and use a stepstool to look at the slide roof as well, especially the inner 4-8 inches closest to the interior trim that can’t be seen ever from the outside.
Good luck, but as Phillip suggests track it down, don’t just mask the smell.

Really. I find that very, very odd. I have found it to be odorless. Something is up. Read the link here:

Sorry it didn’t work for you. I have used it for years anywhere I felt a water issue was a problem to help prevent odor or mold. Never smelled anything. Sorry it didn’t work for you. PhillipB.W.Gentry
