Moon roof window leak on slide

Hello

I have a 2006 36KSQ  with 4 windows in the roof of the slide over the kitchen table and couch.  One has developed a leak.  Im wondering if there is a diagram that shows how window is mounted?   I would like to remove and re-seal ( I think).   I have inspected both inside and outside and I do not see any obvious issues.

Im well versed in leaking fluids so I am aware that the water entry may not be anywhere near the water exit (on to the couch).  Putting a bead of silicon around the outside / top would be my last choice.   The four windows really sever no purpose other than allowing heat into RV (and water) and in a perfect world I would remove them and somehow treat a “new” roof.  Re-cap

Are there any known window install diagrams?

Would anyone be able to shed some light on how these windows may be mounted and come out?

It sounds like you’re describing the “Arizona Room” slide that Carriage designed.  We had one on our 07 Carri-Lite. We had the same issue on more than one of the windows in the ceiling. I tried re-caulking all of them, but the problem persisted. We finally gave up and took it to Fox RV Repair in Millersburg Indiana as they did most all of the Carriage repairs. We had them remove the ceiling windows and put a solid roof/ceiling with multiple light fixtures. It was an extensive job since they had to totally remove the entire Arizona Room slide. They do excellent work at a reasonable price and no one is more knowledgeable of all models of Carriage RV’s.

Upon removing the ceiling windows there was considerable water damage to the ceiling/roof frame which had some wood. I have several pictures of the repair being done at different stages.  Hopefully, the attached images will help you some. There are no schematics or diagrams available.  Carriage folded in 2012 and all rights were bought by Thor Inc.  I’ve made numerous attempts with contacting Thor to release Carriage documents, files, diagrams, and schematics, but they don’t even bother to reply to my requests.

Thank you for the response, information and pictures, this helped a lot.   Im wondering as to why the slide had to be removed for that medication? was it to replace the water damaged wood or just necessary in order to facilitate the roof medication?   I would attempt this medication if the slide doesn’t require removal.  I have no way to remove a slide especially one of that size.   Thanks Again.   ERW

It was pretty much our decision that we didn’t want to be faced with the same situation of the leaks again and requested to do away with the skylights altogether. Based on our requests, I assume that was the easiest and least expensive way to make the repair. We had more than one window that was leaking and we assumed the damage was extensive. The Arizona Room was attractive and a novelty, but I think it was a poor design and could have been done better. Perhaps if the roof of the slide had more of a slope to it for better drainage. There were times after a rain, that water would remain and pool.

After further examination I have found soft spots in both roof and floor of Arizona room slide.  Not large areas but soft non the less.  As I decide when and how to fix, I would jump at the opportunity to view any and all pictures you may have ( the ones above have helped) of the slide in various stages of repair.

I think I can repair / upgrade roof as in remove windows.  The floor also.  I think the floor may have two sheet of plywood on top of one another.  No soft spot form inside but can feel it from below.  Anyway pictures would help.   You can post here or send to Gene.Wright@cox.net.   Thank for any insight you may bring.

ERW,

I think you should be able to determine if slide removal is mandatory by simply (ha!) dropping the interior ceiling panels.  The upside down photo above shows the critical framing left to right. The inside to outside framing is all going away anyway, as is the “window” framing.  You will need something solid to screw the new in/out framing to at both ends.  I suspect that the outside edge on top framing is going to be worse than the top by the angled piece, and that angle piece cannot be rotted too much.  You might find the inside of the fiberglass outer wall is a bit rotted too.  I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless extensive and even then you can Construction glue a good piece of thin plywood on the inside of any soft spots after you have scraped away the rotten wood and allowed everything to dry. Might want to Construction glue a 2×2 under the outer framing if in doubt or a flat 2×4 replacement beneath, then screw a 2×2 to that to hold up the in/out framing.   All of the window treatments will need to come off and if you add framing you may need to modify/notch them and the wallpaper panels. Wall panels of similar thickness is available at either HomeDepot or Lowes if you search in funny locations, but (for unrelated reasons) I painted the entire dinette slide out area – really brightens up the area.

After you get the framing in place you will need to move the slide in and out to screw down lay out the new plywood and tpo/edpm, and actually to tear the roof apart you will need to also move the slide partially in and out a few times.  A good tape and heavy visquine above full length of the slide would prevent rain from entering when slide is in even if it has no roof.

I think I would try to retain the oem tpo or Edpm roof from the inside to the top of the roof windows. Toss the lower section.  Slide a new piece under the old piece all the way up to the angled piece and overlap the old like a shingle, and then also put a new piece over the entire section.

In short, I wouldn’t want to have to do this repair, but if it was needed I wouldn’t hesitate.   Good luck.
