- Our converter makes a humming noise. It might be its location, but in other RV’s we had I’ve not notice it like we do in our Cameo. I was just wondering if other have run into this?Posted: 4:29 AM – Jan 11, 2013Mine has never made a sound.Posted: 7:13 AM – Jan 11, 2013Are you sure it’s not the transfer switch humming? Our transfer switch hummed all the time but since we dont use it I pulled it out. No more hum.Posted: 7:03 PM – Jan 11, 2013I don’t hear any noise out of our converter, but the transfer switch was making a humming noise and I took it out. The mistake I made was that I installed the surge protector where it had been. It also makes a humming noise and where it is mounted acts like a sound board. When it warms up some I will move it to a different location.Posted: 7:02 PM – Jan 11, 2015Teach it the words, and it won’t hum ……Sorry I could not resist again !!!…..RichPosted: 8:41 PM – Jan 12, 2015Do you recognize the tune?Posted: 4:53 PM – Aug 02, 2017We have a 5500 propane generator. We can’t remove our noisy Progressive Dynamics transfer switch. Tried the usual fixes such as blowing out dust and sand or resetting screws. No help. Looks like a replace. Any suggestions?Posted: 5:49 PM – Aug 02, 2017bob9423 wrote:We have a 5500 propane generator. We can’t remove our noisy Progressive Dynamics transfer switch. You may have an older ATS that has AC coils that are used to pull the contacts together. Older ATS cannot be converted….or let me say not worth trying to convert.
Most of the new ATS have DC coils. PD are good choice but call them to make sure the coils are DC.
We have the same Cameo and a PD ATS.
The bottom of the label reads – Coil Voltage: 110V AC
Posted: 11:08 PM – Aug 02, 2017Thanks for the tip. I plan to reopen the panel and get to the TS to get the model # and call PD. We were all over the country and may have had a power surge damage it. We don’t have a surge protector but there is an option to get one with surge protection.Posted: 9:30 AM – Aug 03, 2017The humming sound is usually caused by delaminated plates that get dirt in between the coil/magnet in the contactors. We fight this all the time in electrical circuits. Usually it isn’t an issue due to the noise level around the area(factory, mech. room). Usually no way to correct except to replace the device. Noise level will change with voltage fluctuation and when you move your rig.Posted: 8:04 AM – Aug 14, 2017Replaced old PD 52 transfer relay with a new PD 52. Called PD and they recommended the same PD 52. Unfortunately the same humming noise continues. I can’t “rip it out” as we have a 5500 propane generator that works well when we camp without hookup. We have surge protector. I’m calling again to see if there is solution to problem. Really annoying as our bedroom is above basement and noise bothers my sleep. Anyone else have this issue?Posted: 8:34 AM – Aug 14, 2017Mine hums, sometimes more sometimes less. Sometimes, presumably when the voltage is high enough, it is quiet. When it’s rainy it huns louder than when it is dry, I presume because the rain causes a slight drop in voltage? Some here use those black box power conditioner devices, don’t those adjust the power somehow between the pedestal and the rig? It’s a long shot, but having one of those might lessen the hum. They are expensive. Anyone who uses one of those please chime in if your transfer switch is silent as a result.

…..Berndawg posted about the foam he put under his ATS. Foam reduces the vibration (noise) from being transmitted into the plywood floor. There would still be some through the screws….
The next step up would be the correct size of anti vibration mount…. like these.
Posted: 11:25 AM – Aug 14, 2017I’ve had 8 RV’s and all of them had humming transfer switches. I finally got tired of it in the Carriage and installed a Square D breaker box with three 50 amp 240v breakers, in place of the transfer switch. It was about $50. I mounted it so that it is easily accessible in the basement. Now, I just manually throw the breakers, for shore power or gen power. Takes no time and makes zero noise. Also, a side benefit, it doesn’t melt wires or catch on fire.Posted: 11:03 PM – Aug 23, 2017I blame noise on the Iota transfer box.. I took it out and hard wired (new junction box/breakers) and upgraded the converter after it blew with the transfer box failure. I never hear the converter and it’s a 90 AH unit.B.W.Gentry
