- Not much knowledge of electrical/electricity….so at the risk of asking a very stupid question. We use an external cooler/fridge for extra pop and of course wine and beer storage. At times we use the shore 20 amp shore power and other times we plug direct into an outside outlet on the 5iver. Out of curiosity, is there any advantage (ie: power saving costs) by plugging into the rig instead of shore power?Posted: 6:28 AM – May 29, 2013No difference in power usage. The difference is that if you are plugged into your rig, the cooler power counts against your 50 or 30 amp service, leaving less for other uses. If you plug into shore power, you are not using any of the RV service.Posted: 10:55 AM – May 29, 2013Tks for confirming what I thought was logical. As you mentioned….when using 30 amp…..shore power is the way to go. Must be getting lazier as it’s a longer walk to unplug from the shore outletPosted: 4:50 PM – May 30, 2013bdowling wrote:Not much knowledge of electrical/electricity….so at the risk of asking a very stupid question. As I’m looking for an external 12v cooler for storing my wife’s meds, would you mind telling me what brand/model cooler you’re using?
Posted: 12:14 AM – May 31, 2013Sure thing. It is a Coleman but don’t have a model # for you. I have seen different types and models in Wal-Mart and camping stores. The one we have is ideal, in it can be a cooler and also a heat box. Very flexible this way. We mostly use it as a cooler. There was one time, during a move, I set it incorrectly and hours later went back to find warm lettuce, salad dressing, cheese, etc….. Yikes!! Made that error only once.
