Removing HPL Flooring

        Hi All,
I’ve read through all of the flooring and carpet discussion within the Interior Components section. There is a lot of good information. We are considering replacing the carpet and “Cherry wood” flooring in our 2011 Cameo 32FWS. From reading the topics here, sounds like the Cheery flooring is HPL. I have a couple of questions that perhaps you can help me with before I dive into the work.

        1) Is the Cheery HPL flooring glued to the subfloor, floating or fastened (with brads or the like)?
        2) From the discussions on replacing flooring with Vinyl Plank flooring, can anyone weigh in on their experiences after installing it and how it’s holding up after travels and use.
        3) Again from the discussions, it sounds like the dining/living room slide rests on the original carpet when the slide is in. So, after the renovation to vinyl plank flooring, is there a gap between the slide and the floor when the slide is in (since the VP flooring is thinner than carpet/pad)? Or does the slide want to now rest on the VP flooring?

I probably have more questions but for now I thought I’d see what members have to say. Thanks to all.

        Kevin

Kevin, the popout section of a wood floor is still carpet.  there is also a small section of carpet extending in front of the popout before the wood flooring starts.  Don’t have exact measurements, but do have a photo I hop is small enough to show you.

Kevin, when I made the above enclosed pdf of the too large of a size photo, it crimped the edges quite a bit.

In the photo the slide is fully out.

Hopefully there is enough clarity for you to see the edge of the carpet that in on the slide-out.  versus the carpet piece that does not move.

The carpeted section of the floor that does not move goes all the way to the rear of the 5er and all the way to the entry door trim.  That non-moving piece of carpet is about 2/3 of the length of the carpet on the slide that extends out from the thick vertical wood trim on the slideout.  I am nowhere near the camper.  I am thinking there is 12 inches of carpet beyond the fat vertical trim and 6 more on the floor for a total of 18 inches of carpet showing at the entry door and at the far rear of the 5er when the slide is fully out.  some of the carpet is cut away under the slide wher the pan is.  The pan rides on the carpet.  It would tear up the wood.

Yes, the flooring is the optional HPL offered by Lifestyle in 2013.

my earlier post said wood flooring was throughout the lower level with the exception of dinette slide and about 6 inches out from that carpet when slide is out.  Not true  see attached photo

March 2013 build Looks like new in 2022, but limited use and did not go down the road very much.  However, it endured New Hampshire winters and its freeze/thaw cycles without heat lol those years

Some in the humid southeast have expressed reluctance to change to hpl due to expansion contraction with both moisture and HOT/cold cycles.  I do not know about that.

Thanks John.  Assuming I take out the carpet and existing HPL and replace them with Luxury Vinyl Plank, do you think laying a section of carpet on the LVP for the slide pan to slide on when coming in would work OK?  I’ve seen discussions where others have made “runner” for the slide pans  to rest (or slide) on when retracting.  Thanks again for getting back to me and look forward to your reply.

                    Keveo,

I do not know, but you go that route, be it with carpet or perhaps Teflon, you need to pay attention to the existing height of the carpet and pad and not exceed it.  That would put an angular strain on the slide mechanism and floor mounting bolts that it was not designed for. I do not believe you could raise the outer wall bracket adjustment sufficiently to compensate for the height difference without squeezing the H-seal around the sides/top of slide stretching and perhaps breaking the seal of the wall is put all the way out.  Or, conversely, leaving a gap at the top when the slide is closed.

similarly for the HPL being thicker than most vinyl planking. That could result on the top H-seal not sealing along the top of the slide.  Here you just add a thicker piece of Teflon or carpet.

I suspect, but do not know if you will need to staple or otherwise secure those runners to keep them from being pushed into the room or dragged outside as you move the slide.

I do not believe that the support of the weight of the slide is limited to just the ends where the thick&wide wood trim is, so you might need more than one runner. A stud finder run across the bottom of the slide when out should confirm the presence of rubbing and need for additional runners. Slide belly fabric may identify these areas as well.

if you look at the (www…) master list of topics on flooring I think you will find the details you need from others did or had to do as they attempted to do this mod properly.

the downsized photo will take me a while.  It merely shows a similar model with a short slide that block a set wardrobe drawers.

the photo that did come through “uncropped” shows fairly clearly that line of carpet that does not move in and out with the slide. It is under the slide the entire width of the slide. Ditto under the tv. Both photos are of a 36FWS that has a roller under the garbage can peninsula, and another roller at the base of the stairs. These rollers roll on the wood or vinyl whichever came in the unit/year.
