- We purchased a 2011 Carriage Carri-lite 5th wheel and planned to tow it with our 2010 F-350 SRW, 6.4 ltr engine. We recently found out that instead of having a 20,000 lb. towing capacity described by the dealer, our truck can only safely tow 15,500 lbs. We are now in the market for a 2014 F-350, DRW, 6-7 ltr engine, which we understand can safely tow 22,200 lbs. Does anyone else have a tow weight issue with the Carri-lite?Posted: 3:50 PM – Mar 27, 2014We have a 2011 Carri-Lite 36MAX1 but I opted for a F450 and it handles the trailer like a dream. The F450 has bigger brakes, bigger differential, beefier suspension but is no larger than a F350.Posted: 4:30 PM – Mar 27, 2014Our friends that had a Carry-Lite also had a 450. From what we understood about it, think we’d also suggest you look at the larger truck all other things being the same.
Just a believer in a margin of safety if ya can swing it.
Posted: 5:13 PM – Mar 27, 2014The 2011 to 2014 450 pickup is NOT the same as the beefier 450 that peterspca speaks about. The08’10’s were heck for stout, 19.5 wheels, etc, and needed no air bags to support tha Carriage pin weights, but the 11-14’s are only wide front axle 350’s and definately need air bags to ride level. The 2015 450 due out in the next few months is supposed to bring back the real 450. Having owned both the 08 and 11 450, the reliability of the 6.7 engine is much much better than the 6.4 found on 08-10, and the 11’s on don’t need the pickup cab removed to perform repairs.Posted: 5:15 PM – Mar 27, 2014I tow my 11 Carri with an 11 F350 DRW. No problems whatsoever. Tows like a dream with the Hensley air hitch.Reasons I did not order an F450: I didn’t want 4 wheel drive, I didn’t want a Crew cab, it was $10k+ more expensive.
Very happy with my choice, after 20k miles towing.
Posted: 8:33 AM – Mar 28, 2014Not the same, but I have a 2012 Cameo and a 2006 F-350 dually diesel with a 4.1 rear that can tow 18,100lbs. No problems.
I have the optional Mor-ryde hitch and a 21K receiver in the truck.Posted: 10:20 AM – Mar 28, 2014Just an idea, instead of getting rid of your truck I would do two things. 1st do a dually conversion it would give you the stability and hauling capacity. 2nd change out the gearing, I would be willing to bet you have 3.73 or something like that. I would go to a 4.10 or 4.30 rear end (X2 if you have four wheel drive). By doing these two things I think it would save money.Eric
Posted: 4:26 PM – Mar 28, 2014Eric,I’m not sure, but check on the dually conversion. The one I saw doesn’t change the payload capacity. In order to do that, the axle and suspension need to be changed as well. The kit I saw adds the outside tires, but other than some additional stability, it was mostly cosmetic.
