Seems a little slow around here for just general discussions. Thought I would stir it up a little! This is all in fun on this topic. A little background here: May of 2018 we had to sell our 2016 Chevy 3500 due to health/financial reasons. (Don’t feel sorry for me its just the way it is sometimes). Now we don’t have anything to tow the LS with. In the next 1.5 years we will be back in the tow vehicle market. I have always been a GM guy. Dad retired  from GM and we always got a discount! For the last 1.5 years we have been driving a Ford F150 XLT 4×4 with most of the toys on it. Its really pretty nice even though Mom and Dad look cross eyed at us in a Ford. Our target vehicle will be a 2017 or newer GM, Ford or maybe Ram 3500 4×4 series.

      What do you tow with?

      How do you like it?

What weight are you towing?(I don’t need a weight slip just guess)

      What hitch are you using?

      Any Problems?

If you had to do over what would you change?

Sure why not,  2005 chevy 2500HD Duramax with exhaust brake, lift pump, deep trans pan, Big trans cooler, Aux radiator and severe duty brakes, Cat oil filter, Racor fuel filter,  Timbrens.  No tuner.  NO DEF!  No major issues other than maintenance.

Tow cameo 35SB3  Disc brakes and 17.5 tires Comfort Ride hitch .  Change nothing 200,000 miles.

          That’s what I’m talking about!

          What’s that 35SB3 weigh approximately?

2015 Chevrolet 3500 SRW, Duramax, Allison Transmission, Air bags Anderson hitch.  Pulling 2015 LS38RS,  Approx 18000 lbs.  Love the hitch and set up, would consider DRW but hate the parking issues when not pulling.  Def has not even been a issue, however, I was very nervous about getting it prior to realizing the significant increase in torque and power along with minimal cost and maintenance concerns.  We are in Mazatlan Mexico for the winter and have had no issues at all.

On my 3rd D-Max.  The latest is a 2018 GMC 3500 drw double-cab 4×4.  Zero issues.  Love it.  Not a Ford guy and not a consideration for various reason which is not the subject of this thread.  Love the truck.  Rides great, very quiet, powerful and very quick.  Comfortable truck.

Our 2014 LS36fw weight in at 15420 lbs for a weekend trip with empty tanks except for propane.

Have a Trailer Saver BD3 just about maxed out on the hitch with 3400 lbs.  The BD5 was not on the market when I got the BD3.  I will never own any kind of rigid/fixed  hitch again!

I’m pretty happy with the overall set-up including truck and trailer.  I do not have IS on the trailer but do have 17.5 rims and disc brakes.  I think it tows pretty nice.

We have a 2013 Lifestyle LS37RESL. According to the CAT scale, our loaded weight is about 15K, pin weight right about 3K.

We are pulling with a 2017 F-350 DRW with the 6.7L Powerstroke Diesel (with Curt hitch), and it has been superb. Our old truck was an 2002 F-350 with the 7.3L Powerstroke and a Pull-Rite auto-slider hitch. Out of the box the 6.7L engine has over twice the HP and torque as the old 7.3L, even with a chip in it. I cannot imagine ever needing to tweak the new engine in any way. Getting off a stop with the old truck was like watching the space shuttle take off – smoke, shaking, noise, fire, and little by little it started moving. With the new truck I could merge at 70 if I really wanted to go that fast. It’s effortless. DEF has been a non-issue, and I confess I don’t see why people get so bent out of shape over it. It’s cheap, isn’t needed very often, and you get plenty of warning when it’s getting low.

When shopping for the new truck we agonized over SRW vs. DRW. With the SRW I would have been right at the max weights, so bit the bullet and went with the dually. No regrets whatsoever. It is so solid, so stable, you could actually forget the trailer was back there. The 3K pin weight drops the rear end about 1-1/2″, which basically just levels the truck. I cannot imagine pulling a large 5th wheel without a dually. It’s just a bit of a pain to park at the grocery store.

We have a 2015 LS36FW and recently upgraded to a 2019 GMC 3500HD dually . Had a ’16 of the same truck however the turbo went out at only 9k miles so dealer ordered a turbo and then we traded. There is a noticeable improvement in towing between the ’16 an the ’19. We have always had GM trucks except for the old farm truck a 97 Ford f350 7.3 diesel.

My driver says the ’19 tows the LS effortlessly. We also upgraded from B&W hitch to the TrailerSaver TS3. TrailerSaver is amazing and has made our towing experience 1000 times better.

Not sure what the trailer weighs but according to CAT scale truck & trailer were 26,240 with 13,000 on the trailer axles. We don’t have W/D, don’t FT yet, and don’t carry water. We need to take the truck back to the scales to see what it weighs so we can have a good number for trailer weight.

                      Interesting thread !!

I went back and pulled a couple weight slips for fun. Just FYI, when I weigh usually everything is in the truck, the bed and trailer. Full weight. I think on this one we had about 1/2 tank of water and black and grey were empty for the most part. Carry several tool kits, spare parts and a couple of grills. (gas and a smoker) 3860 lbs on the pin. 18080 lbs for the LS by itself. If I remember right that is over the sticker on the trailer but the sticker (17000+or so) is original with the factory axles before the Morryde IS 8k and disc brakes.

Good to hear you’ll be back on the road!

2016 F350 CC SRW 4×4 King Ranch (steel body and the last year before a model upgrade) tows good and is comfortable but I don’t like it when the wind picks up. The 4×4 high makes a big difference off the pavement and a huge difference towing in the snow.  Backing we’ll often used 4×4 low.

We were ready to order a 2020 F550 with the new 10 speed but they modified the engine and boosted the hp.  My friends that work at Ford told me to wait and see. I checked with the dealer a couple of weeks ago. The 550s they ordered in Sept. don’t have VINs yet.

Was talking to someone that got a really good deal on a RAM 5500 by ordering through what I think he said was (should have taken notes) a Stocking Fleet Outfitter???

                          Trailer is 16,000lb around.

Trailer Saver TS3  …..a BD5 next time, takes up less area in the bed

2018 Ram Megacab DRW pulling a 32FWS at 15K.  Went with the ram again for the Mega cab.  The cabin space just can’t be beat and this in the only combination of any brand DWR that will give you a shortbed.  I would prefer a Ford, but they are over a foot longer and will not work in my storage area.  I am using (and have for 12 years) the B&W companion.  This one uses the puck system and takes up most of the bed.  I preferred the old companion hitch that slid down into the goosenck ball hole, but this hitch is much stronger and heavier.  To the point where I need help to remove from the truck, where with the old one, it was a simple 1 person job.

My 34SB3 weighs about 14500 loaded.  My Ram has about 104,000 miles.  The only problem I had was a defective DEF heater couple of months ago.  Cost to replace was $500. Pulls great with good mileage.  On average I get 11 mpg.  Factory specs are 15,000 miles between oil and filter change.  I went with Ram for the Cummins engine.  75% of all over the road trucks have Cummins. Ford only sells to Ford and Chevy’ Isuzu engine is only used by Chevy and Isuzu.  That made a difference to me.

i would buy a Ram again.
