We have a new Ford 350 on order and it’s coming with Ford’s fifth wheel hitch prep. We also have a Trailer Saver DB3 air hitch by Hensley. I see that they make an attachment that that works with the Ford and was wondering if anyone has tried it and how it works.

I have a similar adapter from Air-Safe. Either will work. They are essentially a set of rails welded onto plate steel with holes lined up to use Ford’s stock quick release hitch parts. I think the Trail Saver one looks better, and might be lighter while still being plenty strong enough.

I’m sure the adapter will raise the hitch and I might need to adjust the height of our Trailer Saver, but will wait until I can hook up and see when our new truck comes in.

        Traveler,

Your old rails were bolted to the frame and flush with the pickup bed. The adapter with factory prep puts those rails a hairs breath above the factory bed. Depending upon the year and model of your old Tow Vehicle, you may find that both the bed and siderails of the new truck are “taller” than your old one.

The IS raised the 5er 1.5 inches so this should not be a problem.

If adjustment is needed, the pin box adjusts in 2 inch increments; the hitch in 1.5 inch increments.

We are running level now, so I’m sure I will need to make some adjustments. The one thing I don’t know at this time is we are running air bags on our present truck and I will wait and see if I need them on the new one, that will also effect how level we will be. Our old truck was a 3/4 ton and the new one is a 1 ton.

        Traveler,

You might be ok without airbags the 34 foot unit; no way on a 36 or 37. I would wait and see.

Also, older than 2007 truck beds sat quite a bit lower than the new ones. Dually’s sit about 1 inch lower than the SRW models, and 1.5 inches lower than the “off-road” and “4×4” models. You might want to get out a tape and measure what you have for bed deck and side-rail height, and, with that information, get out the spec book for the 2014 just to begin the figuring process. Then talk with the Trailer Saver DB3 air hitch folks to see what options they have for raising/lowering the hitch height.
