Make sure you don’t put DEF into your diesel fuel tank. Two the three cups of DEF in the wrong tank can cost big bucks to fix. A friend of ours put gas is his diesel tank by mistake and that cost was an expensive repair. :o

Expensive like 8 grand expensive. DEF suspected of being the cause of many HPFP and injector issues with the fill location next to the diesel fill in Ford.

A friend said his dealer had told him the cost would be between $12-$14 K. He’s checking with his insurance company to see if they will cover it. About 5 years ago another friend put gas in the tank of his diesel and it cost him $500 to get it fixed, DEF must do far more damage.

They should make a locking cap for the DEF so this wont happen since it only needs to be filled a few times a year.

Awkward as it may be, our 2011 Chevy has the DEF fill under the hood, next to the firewall. Difficult to fill, but some distance from the diesel fuel fill

Some years ago I put about three gallons of gas in the diesel tank by mistake in my 2003 Dodge Ram. I filled the tank up with diesel (about 30 gallons) and I did not have any engine problems. The diesel and gas pump hose covers were both green and I grabbed the wrong one at first.

I have not and I sure hope I do not make the DEF mistake.

The biggest danger is when you are at a truck stop and want to buy both diesel and Def. Just go slow and pay attention. Def is a lot cheaper from the pump than a jug, but when you use a jug to fill the def you don’t normally have the diesel cap off.

It is very easy for a mechanic to tell if def was ever accidently put into the diesel system – crystals everywhere, even if it was very little.

If you ever do this by mistake do not turn the key on or start the engine. Turning the key on pressurized and circulates the fuel, an that is $8-12k REALLY. When the tow truck comes do not le them turn the key to get it out of park! If you do this it is a relatively cheap fix. Drain tank, remove tank, flush out, and reinstall tank.
